Banana and nutella loaf
Delicious banana and nutella loaf with oodles of chocolate spread swirled through the middle. It’s the nicest banana bread you’ll ever eat!
Nutella banana bread is the perfect recipe for using up over ripe bananas. Banana and chocolate go so well together, so the addition of Nutella to our favourite banana bread recipe really does just take it to another level!
Regular readers of this blog will know that we’ve made banana bread a few times. We’ve got delicious cinnamon ones, and fruity ones, but this time I thought we’d be a bit naughty and add some chocolate spread (aka Nutella)! The banana and nutella muffins we made recently were delicious so I thought this banana and nutella loaf would be equally good, and we weren’t disappointed. The Nutella swirled through the batter means every slice has some delicious chocolate inside. Yum!
How can kids help make the Nutella banana bread?
There are lots of fun and easy steps for kids to help with in this bake. There’s the usual jobs of measuring and mixing the ingredients together, and cracking a few eggs that most easy bakes have.
An extra task which is a great way of getting toddlers and young children involved in the bake is mashing the bananas. If your bananas are soft, this can easily be done with a fork or even a potato masher.
My kids also enjoyed swirling the Nutella through the banana bread batter. You can make this a bit easier by heating the chocolate spread slightly before mixing it through.
The idea is to swirl it enough so you can see a lovely ripple of chocolate through the batter, and make sure that everyone get’s a little bite of chocolate in every mouthful.
How to store Nutella banana bread
This banana chocolate loaf can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days.
It’s also a great recipe for making ahead. You can freeze the loaf for a month or two. Before popping it in the freezer, wrap it tightly in cling film (Saran wrap) and then cover it in tin foil.
When you’re ready to eat it, leave it out to thaw at room temperature.
Tips for making Nutella banana bread
Use over ripe bananas.
The riper the banana the sweeter it becomes. That means baking things like this banana bread is the perfect way of using up super ripe or even brown bananas.
You can also freeze over ripe bananas to use at a later date, like we did with this recipe. If you want to do this, simply wrap your peeled banana in clingfilm and pop it in the freezer. Coming out the freezer the bananas can be really soggy (and a little bit disgusting according to the kids), but are still perfect for baking.
Don’t add extra Nutella
Don’t be tempted to add a few extra swirls of Nutella. If you use too much it’ll make the batter too heavy and dense. If you love Nutella (like our youngest does), and want a bit more than the recipe suggests, you’re better to spread a dollop on your slice before you eat it.
What else can you use overripe bananas in?
We use bananas in our baking all the time, so we’ve got lots of other recipes you can use bananas with:

Difficulty: Easy
Time: 40 minutes plus 50 minutes baking
Serves: approx 10 slices
Ingredients
100g (1/2 cup) butter
150g (2/3 cup) caster sugar
2 eggs
3 bananas (the riper the better)
250g (2 cups) plain / all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
100g (1/4 cup + 1 tbsp) Nutella
How to make banana and chocolate loaf
Preheat the oven to 180C / 170C Fan / 350F and line a 1kg/2lb loaf tin with baking paper.
Beat the butter and sugar together
Measure the butter (100g) and sugar (150g) and put them in a large mixing bowl or stand mixer. Beat them together with a hand held mixer or use the paddle attachment of your mixer until they are light and fluffy.
Add the eggs
Get your children to break the eggs into a small bowl. We do it in a small bowl first in case shell goes in too. If shell does go in, fish it out with a larger piece of shell or a tea spoon – it will stick to that better than it will your finger. Add them to your butter/sugar mixer one at a time, mixing between each addition. The batter will be quite wet and sloppy at this point.
Add the bananas
Get your little chef to peel and mash the bananas – we just used a fork. This can be a fun job for kids to do, especially if the bananas are very ripe and soft as this will make it easier.
Add them to your mixing bowl and stir them in until they are well combined.
Add the dry ingredients
Measure the flour (250g) and baking powder (2 tsp), and add to your banana mixture. Give everything one last stir so everything is mixed together.
Make the banana and Nutella loaf
Before you add the Nutella, you can heat it in the microwave for 10 seconds or so to make it a bit runnier and easier to spoon.
Pour half the banana batter into the bottom of the loaf tin. Add three tbsp of Nutella on top of the batter. Using a skewer or knife, swirl the Nutella through the batter. Pour the rest of the batter over the top, then add three more tbsp of Nutella and swirl it through. My kids really enjoyed doing this (and then licking the spoon afterwards), just make sure that they’ve swirled enough so the Nutella is nice and dispersed.
Bake the banana and Nutella bread
Bake the loaf in your preheated oven for around 50 minutes. It’s ready when a skewer or sharp knife inserted into the middle comes out clean.
Remove the banana and Nutella loaf from the oven and leave to cool for a few minutes, before removing from the tin and leaving on a wire rack to cool completely.
Serve and enjoy!

I love it too. The only way to improve a regular banana bread is to add some Nutella I think!

Second time making this recipe and trying it out with soft dark sugar as that’s all I’ve got – fingers crossed it turns out yummy! I added cinnamon (instead of nutella) too

I love banana bread either with nutella or cinnamon. Both equally delicious. I’m sure it’ll still taste good with soft dark sugar – let us know how it turns out?

I’d never have thought you freeze a banana. Fab recipe I’ll definitely be trying. #coolmumclub

I’d never tried freezing them before. They were a horrible squidgy mess when they came out the freezer so only good for something like banana bread or a smoothy, but it’s a great way of saving waste.
