Nutella cupcakes
Nutella cupcakes takes our favourite easy chocolate cupcakes to the next level with the addition of a secret Nutella filling and delicious Nutella frosting.
Nutella cupcakes combine our favourite chocolate cupcake with a secret Nutella filling and delicious Nutella frosting. The chocolate hazelnut adds a beautiful flavour to these simple cupcakes.
It’s a simple way of adding some hazelnut spread goodness to a basic chocolate cupcake and what baking can’t be made better with the addition of a little Nutella!?
The chocolate spread adds a mouth-watering soft chocolate centre with very little real effort. And the Nutella frosting is a smooth and silky delight.
How can kids help to make the Nutella cupcakes?
As with all cupcake recipes there are loads of easy steps kids can get involved in from measuring and mixing the cupcake ingredients to cracking the eggs.
The added steps in these particular cupcakes are very simple so even young children should be able to help. Once i’d cut the centre out of the cupcake, my kids enjoyed getting to spoon in the Nutella filling, (not to mention licking the spoon afterwards!)
There’s also a good chance for kids to practice their piping skills. It’s a very soft frosting thanks to the additional Nutella which makes it easy and very forgiving to pipe.
If your kids are very young or find piping the icing a bit too tricky, get them to add the sprinkles instead. Even really young children and toddlers can get involved with that.
How long do Nutella cupcakes keep?
These cupcakes will keep in an airtight container for 3-5 days (if they last that long!) If you want to keep them for longer you can wrap them and put them in the freezer before you’ve filled and iced them. They’ll keep in the freezer for a few months. Defrost them fully then fill them with Nutella and ice them before serving them.
What can I use instead of self raising flour?
If you don’t have self raising flour swap it for an equal amount of plain or all-purpose flour and put in an additional teaspoon of baking powder.
How do you fill cupcakes?
Filling cupcakes is actually very easy. If you have an apple corer you can use that to remove the centre from your cupcake. If you don’t have one use a sharp knife. Then either spoon or pipe in the filling, in this case chocolate spread.
Before you put the core back in, cut a little off the bottom of it so it sits nicely back on top of the cupcake.
Does Nutella work in frosting?
Yes! Adding Nutella into your buttercream will make it even more creamy, chocolatey and delicious. I’d recommend it in, not only these Nutella filled cupcakes, but in an chocolate or vanilla cupcake.

How to make Nutella cupcakes
Preheat your oven to 200C / 180C Fan / 390F and prepare your baking tin.
Get your kids to line muffin tin with paper or silicon cupcake cases.
Mix everything together
Get your kids to measure everything out and add it to a free-standing mixer or large mixing bowl. You can add everything in any order but if you do it in the order below you won’t miss anything out.
Start by getting your kids to crack the eggs into a small bowl before putting it into your mixing bowl. We never add them straight in in case any shell goes in. If you do get some rogue shell, simply fish it out with a piece of larger shell.
Measure the flour, sugar and butter and add them to your mixing bowl. If your butter isn’t soft (we always forget to take it out of the fridge beforehand), pop it in the microwave to soften it, but not enough to melt it.
Get your kids to add the baking powder. Make sure they use their finger to level the half tea spoon so you get just the right amount.
Finally, measure the cocoa powder into a small bowl, and get your kids to spoon in the boiling water (be careful with small fingers around the hot water). Mix it together until you have a chocolate paste. Add it to your mixing bowl.
Mix everything together with the k-paddle attachment of your free-standing mixer or a hand held mixer. If you need to scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula to make sure everything gets mixed in.
Mix it for a minute or two until everything is well combined and you have a nice smooth chocolate cupcake batter.
Bake the cupcakes
Get your kids to fill the cupcake cakes ¾ full with the chocolate cupcake batter. An ice cream scoop often dishes out the perfect amount, with less mess, so can be a great tool for kids to use.
Bake the cupcakes for approximately 15-20 minutes. They’re ready when they’ve risen and a skewer or sharp knife or cocktail stick inserted into the middle comes out clean.
Remove them from the oven and leave them to cool in the tin for a few minutes then pop them on a wire rack to cool completely.
Fill the cupcakes with Nutella
Once the cupcakes have cooled use a sharp knife or an apple corer to cut a little bit out of the centre of each of your cupcakes.
Get your kids to fill each centre with a tea spoon of Nutella. Cut the bottom of each cupcake core so it sits nicely when you put it back then get your kids to place each core back on top of the Nutella centre.
If your Nutella is a bit hard and difficult to spoon melt it for 5-10 seconds in the microwave to make it runnier and easier to spoon.
Decorate the Nutella cupcakes
Start by making the Nutella frosting. Measure the butter and icing sugar out and put them into a large mixing bowl or free-standing mixer. Again, if your butter isnt soft chop it up then pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to soften, but not melt it.
Add the milk then cover the mixer with a tea towel (option, but it will save a bit of mess!). Start on a slow speed and mix the butter icing together with the k-paddle of your free-standing mixer or hand held mixer.
Mix the icing for at least 5 minutes. The longer you mix it, the softer and more delicious it will become.
Get your kids to add the Nutella and give your icing one final mix so it is well combined.
Fill a piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle with the Nutella buttercream icing and use a food bag clip to seal the top end. This should make it easier for kids to pipe without worrying about the icing coming out the top.
Let your kids pipe swirls of Nutella icing on top of the cupcakes. We find the easiest way of doing this is to hold the piping bag at the top with their right hand to squeeze the icing out and use their other hand to guide the bag.
You might need to help them squeeze or guide the bag. Start at the outside and go round in circles until you get to the middle.
Add some chocolate sprinkles or chocolate shards on top. If you have younger children who struggle with piping this can be a good job for them to take charge of.
Serve and enjoy.
