Banana Nutella muffins
Banana Nutella muffins take a simple banana muffin to the next level with the addition of a swirl of chocolate spread.
Banana and nutella muffins are the perfect combination of banana and chocolate – two flavours just born to be together.
Our banana and Nutella loaf is one of our most popular bakes and these muffins are just as delicious. They are a simple and quick way of using up over ripe bananas (which we always seem to have) and make a perfect snack / treat for kids.
How can kids help make these banana and nutella muffins?
These muffins are a great, easy bake for children. You can just mix everything together in a bowl with a wooden spoon so there’s no need for any special equipment like mixers.
Children can help to measure and mix everything together as well as scooping the mixture into the cases. Children can also mash the bananas which is a great job for young children.
Finally, you can get your kids to help add the chocolate spread and swirl it through the muffins.
How do you store banana Nutella muffins?
These muffins can be stored in an airtight container for a few days.
You can also make them ahead of time and freeze them. Simply wrap each muffin well in cling film and pop them in a freezer bag. They’ll keep in the freezer for a few months, just take them out before you want to eat them and let them thaw at room temperature.
How ripe should the bananas be?
The riper the banana the sweeter it becomes. That means baking things like these muffins is the perfect way of using up over ripe or even brown bananas.
You can also freeze over ripe bananas to use at a later date, like we did. If you want to do this, wrap the peeled banana in cling film and pop them in the freezer. When you want to use them take them out the freezer and let them defrost fully – they come out a bit soggy but are perfect for baking with.

Ingredients
230g (1 3/4 cups) self raising flour
150g (3/4 cup) granulated white sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 large free range eggs, lightly beaten
113g (1/2 cup) melted unsalted butter
3 large very ripe bananas, mashed
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 tbsp Nutella
how to make banana and nutella muffins
Preheat your oven to 180C / 170C Fan / 350F and line a 12 hold muffin tin with paper liners
Mix the dry ingredients
Get your kids to help you measure the flour, sugar and salt into a large mixing bowl and give it all a stir.
Mix the wet ingredients
Crack the eggs into a separate mixing bowl. We often do it in a small bowl first, before adding it to our mixing bowl just in case any shell goes in. If it does, simply fish it out with a larger piece of shell – it’ll stick better to that than your finger.
Measure the butter in a small bowl and melt it in the microwave (or on the hob). Add it to the eggs along with the vanilla extract (1 tsp).
Get your little one to peel and mash the bananas (this is a great step for little ones to help with!) before adding to your eggs and butter mixture.
Mix everything together
Pour the flour mixture into your banana mixture and gently fold together. It doesn’t have to be too thoroughly mixed – it should still be a little lumpy.
Make the banana and Nutella muffins
Get your kids to help divide the the banana muffin mixture into your cases.
Spoon four tablespoons of Nutella into a small bowl and pop it in the microwave for 10-20 seconds or so just to melt it a bit and make it easier to mix into the muffins.
Use a teaspoon to add a little Nutella on to the centre of each muffin then swirl the the Nutella into the muffin using the end of a spoon. We found it best just to do a little mixing to give them the nice swirl appearance. If you mix them too much you lose the definition between the chocolate and banana but they’ll still taste great.
Bake the muffins
Pop the muffins into the oven for 20-25 minutes. They’re ready when a skewer or sharp knife put into the centre of the muffin comes out clean.
Leave to cool in the muffin tray for 5 minutes then remove and place a cooling rack.
Enjoy!
