Chocolate chip banana bread

Chocolate chip banana bread is a delicious twist on our classic, easy banana bread recipe.
We love banana bread, it’s our go to bake when we have over-ripe bananas we need to use up. But because we make it so often we like to add some twists to keep it interesting. We’ve added all sorts of things and made tasty Nutella banana bread, blueberry and banana loaf as well as a caramel banana loaf, and this chocolate chip version is just as delicious.
Our basic banana bread is lovely and moist, and the chocolate chips add a nice bit of texture and flavour. If you love banana bread, this recipe won’t disappoint.
How can kids help to make the chocolate chip banana bread?
Banana bread is a great bake for kids. It’s super easy to make with everything just getting mixed together in one bowl and this chocolate chip version is no different.
Kids can get involved measuring and mixing everything together as well as mashing up the bananas and adding in the chocolate chips.
If you have very young children who want to get involved in the kitchen mashing bananas is a great job for them.
What can I use if I don’t have any self raising flour?
If you don’t have any self raising flour you can swap it for an equal amount of plain or all purpose flour and add 1 ½ tea spoons of baking powder.
How do you store chocolate chip banana bread?
Chocolate chip banana bread never lasts long in our house, but it will keep in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days. There’s no need to refrigerate it unless you live in a very hot climate.
If you want to keep your banana bread for longer, you can freeze it for up to 3 months. To do this, simply wrap it well in cling film/ glad wrap and pop it in a freezer bag. Make sure you defrost it fully before you serve it.
What else can you use overripe bananas in?

How to make chocolate chip banana bread
Preheat your oven to 180C / 160C Fan / 350F and grease and line a 2 lb loaf tin with baking or greaseproof paper.
We find it easiest to add a strip of baking paper the width of our tin in one direction before adding another strip going the other way. If you leave some overhanging the edge it will make it easier for you to remove the banana bread from the tin once it’s baked.
Cream the butter and sugars together
Get your kids to measure out the butter and sugars and add them to a large mixing bowl or free-standing mixer. If your butter isn’t soft, chop it into a few pieces and pop it in the microwave for 10 seconds or so to soften it, but not long enough to melt it. If you’ve taken it straight from the fridge and it’s still hard, you won’t be able to mix it in.
Cream the butter and sugars together using hand held mixers, the k-paddle of your free-standing mixer or wooden spoons until they are light and fluffy.
Add the eggs
Get your kids to crack the eggs into a small bowl. We never add ours straight in, just in case any shell goes in. If/when it does simply fish it out with a larger piece of shell or a teaspoon. It will stick to that better than it will your finger.
Add the eggs, one at a time, to your mixing bowl. Mix them in, in between each addition. Your mixture will be quite sloppy at this point.
Add the dry ingredients
Measure out the flour and baking powder and add them to your mixing bowl. Make sure your kids use their finger to level the teaspoon of baking powder before you add it so that you add just the right amount.
Mix the flour in until you have a nice smooth batter.
Prepare the bananas
Get your kids to peel and chop the bananas then using a fork or potato masher, mash them up. This is a great job for even very young children to take charge of. Add the bananas to your mixing bowl.
Mix the bananas into your batter until they it is all well combined.
Add the chocolate chips
Get your kids to add the chocolate chips to your banana bread batter, saving some back for sprinkling on top later if you like. Stir them in with a wooden spoon or spatula until they are well mixed through.
Bake the chocolate chip banana bread
Pour the batter into the loaf tin and spread it into each corner with a spatula or the back of a spoon. Add the chocolate chips you saved to the top of the loaf.
Bake the chocolate chip banana bread for 50-60 minutes It’s ready when a skewer or sharp knife inserted into the middle comes out clean.
If you find the top of your loaf is browning too much before it is ready, cover it in foil for the last 10 minutes or so while it finishes baking.
Remove the chocolate chip banana bread from the oven and leave it to cool in the tin.
Once it has cooled, turn it out of the tin, serve and enjoy!
