Nutella chocolate mug cake
Mug cakes are such a simple bake to do with kids and perfect if you want to make something but don’t have a lot of time. And this nutella chocolate mug cake is simply delicious.
James got a mug cake mug for his birthday and was eager to try it out. The kids didn’t think it was fair though that they didn’t get one, so we let each of them choose one to make as well. Unsurprisingly, Lewis wanted to make this nutella chocolate mug cake and Hannah chose a vanilla and strawberry one.
Mug cakes are such a simple bake to do with kids and perfect if you want to make something but don’t have a lot of time. They’re not quite as nice as a properly baked cake, but they’re ready in a few minutes which makes up for it. And the fact they only serve one, is perfect if you just want a little taste of something sweet.
We tried a few different flavours, but they lend themselves experiementing with flavours and adding other toppings – peanut butter, raspberries, sprinkles, let kids choose their favourite extras and see how they turn out!
How can kids help to make the chocolate mug cake?
As this is such an easy recipe for a mug cake, your kids can do it all for themselves! My kids enjoyed measuring everything out and giving it a mix before putting it in the microwave. These really are the perfect recipe for kids to try as they’re so so easy.

How to make a nutella chocolate mug cake
Mix all the ingredients together in a large mug (around 375ml)
Get your kids to measure the flour (4 tbsp), sugar (3 tbsp), cocoa powder (2 tbsp) baking powder (½ tsp) milk (3 tbsp), oil 1 (tbsp), vanilla extract (1 tsp). Make sure to level each tablespoon or teaspoon with your finger as you are measuring so that you get accurate measurements of everything.
Mix everything together carefully with a teaspoon. Make sure it’s properly mixed – including all the bits at the bottom of the mug.
Add the Nutella
Spoon the Nutella on top of the mixture.
Cook the nutella chocolate mug cake
Pop your mug in the microwave and cook it on full power for 90 seconds – 2 minutes. Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t spill over, especially if you’re using a smaller mug.
It’s ready when the sponge is nice and light and fluffy.
Remove the mug cake from your microwave and leave to cool for a minute or so before adding the additional spoon of Nutella.

awesome! turned out so good:) only thing is that it was a little dry, not sure why. but its really good, nice recipe!!!!
I’m glad you liked it! If it’s turned out a little dry I might suggest microwaving it a little less next time. Every microwave is different, so it’s difficult to give a precise cooking time.
