Chocolate chip banana muffins
Chocolate chip banana muffins are the perfect bake for any banana bread lover, especially those who also love a bit of chocolate.
Chocolate chip banana muffins are a delicious banana muffin with the some added chocolate chips. We’ve used our favourite easy banana bread recipe, but portioned them up into individual muffins, and added some chocolate for a little treat.
These muffins are lovely and moist with a delicious banana flavour. The chocolate chips add some nice pops of flavour and texture.
Like any kind of banana bread, they are a great way of using up left over bananas – something we’ve got no shortage of in our house.
How can kids help make these chocolate chip banana muffins?
These chocolate chip banana muffins are so easy, they are a great recipe for kids who want to bake. You simply measure everything out and mix it all together in one bowl which is something I always like when I’m baking with kids.
Your kids can practice cracking eggs, measuring, and mixing. Young children and toddlers can also help by preparing the bananas. Even toddlers can help peel, chop and mash the bananas.
Kids can also help to add the muffin mixture to muffin cases. If you have an ice-cream scoop they often dish out just the right amount, making this job even easier and less messy.
How long do chocolate chip banana muffins keep?
These muffins will keep for a few days in an air tight container. If you want to keep them for longer, you can freeze them for up to three months. Simply wrap them in cling film / glad wrap and pop them in a freezer bag. Make sure you defrost them fully before serving them.
How ripe should the bananas be?
Bananas become sweeter as they ripen which means baking things like these muffins is the perfect way of using up over ripe or even brown bananas.
You can also freeze over ripe bananas to use at a later date. If you want to do this, wrap the peeled banana in cling film and pop them in the freezer. When you want to use them take them out the freezer and let them defrost fully – they come out a bit soggy but are perfect for baking with.

Ingredients
100g (½ cup) butter, softened
175g (¾ cup) caster sugar
2 eggs
2 bananas
225g (1 ½ cup) self raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
100g (1 ½ cup) chocolate chips
How to make chocolate chip banana muffins
Preheat your oven to 190C / 170C Fan / 375F and line a muffin tin with cases.
Mix all the banana muffin ingredients together
Get your kids to measure out all the ingredients (except the bananas and chocolate chips) into a small bowl before adding them to a large mixing bowl or free-standing mixer.
You can either use a baking spread like we did here or butter. If you use butter it needs to be soft enough to mix. Either take it out the fridge half an hour or so before you start or pop it in the microwave for a few seconds. If you’re using a baking spread, you can add it straight in.
When you’re cracking the eggs, do them in a small bowl first, just to make sure no shell gets in. If it does, use a larger piece of shell or a teaspoon to fish it out. It’s easier to do that, than to use your finger.
Once you’ve added everything to your mixing bowl, use the k-paddle of your mixer, a hand held mixer or even wooden spoons, to mix everything together until you have a nice smooth batter.
Add the bananas and chocolate chips
Preparing the bananas is a great job for little kids. They should be able to peel, chop and mash the bananas before adding them to your mixing bowl.
Finally, get your kids to add the chocolate chips, keeping some back to add on top for later.
Give your muffin mixture one last mix with a spatula or wooden spoon so that the chocolate chips and bananas are well dispersed.
Make the banana & chocolate chip muffins
If you’ve got one, an easy way to get the banana muffin mixture into your cases is to use an ice-cream scoop. It measures out the perfect amount and makes a lot less mess than regular spoons which is great when you’re baking with kids!
If you don’t have a scoop, get your kids to use a spoon to divide the mixture among your muffin cases. Make sure they look even otherwise they’ll cook at different rates.
Get your kids to add a few chocolate chips to the top of each banana muffin.
Bake the chocolate chip banana bread muffins
Pop your banana muffins in the oven for 20-25 minutes. They’re ready when they’ve turned golden and a skewer or sharp knife put in the middle comes out clean.
Remove the muffins from the oven and leave them to cool for a few minutes before removing them from the tin and leaving them to cool completely on a wire rack.
Serve and enjoy!
