Chocolate glazed donuts
These baked chocolate glazed donuts are a delicious easy treat kids will love making (and eating!)
Our chocolate glazed donuts are a delicious treat. They’re baked, not fried which not only makes them a little healthier it makes them a really simple bake for kids to enjoy.
We love donuts (who doesn’t) and I enjoy making them at home but don’t like frying things in hot oil when my kids are helping so baked donuts are a great alternative.
We’ve made baked iced donuts before and apple cinnamon donuts, but this time my kids requested a chocolate version so they helped me come up with these chocolate frosted donuts.
Despite being baked, and not using any yeast, they’re still deliciously light and fluffy and the chocolate glaze makes them feel very decadent.
The best thing is they’re really easy to make and can be ready in no time.
How can kids help to make chocolate glazed donuts?
These chocolate donuts are really easy for kids to make and because they’re baked, not fried, much safer than some other recipes for kids.
Kids can help to measure and mix all the ingredients together and then fill the donut pan. Once you’ve glazed the donuts your kids can also help decorate them with sprinkles or chocolate shavings. This is a fun job that even young children and toddlers can help with.
Do I need a donut pan?
It’s much easier to make these with a donut pan but if you don’t have one you can use a regular muffin tin.
To give their donuts their hole, take a square of tin foil or baking parchment and line the bottom of the muffin hole then shape the centre of the square around your finger to crease a middle ‘donut hole’.
Alternatively if you feel like a donut but don’t feel like creating your own donut pan, why not try our delicious doffins – they’re half donut and half muffin and very very tasty.
How long do chocolate glazed donuts keep?
These donuts are best enjoyed on the day you make them but will keep for a day or so in an air tight container.

½ tsp salt
110g (½ cup) caster sugar
120 ml (½ cup) milk
2 eggs
20g (1/8 cup) butter
1 tsp vanilla
For the chocolate glaze
90g (½ cup) chocolate
1 tbsp golden syrup
1 tbsp butter
How to make chocolate glazed donuts
Preheat your oven to 160C / 140C Fan / 320F and thoroughly grease a donut pan with a little oil or butter.
Mix the dry ingredients together
Get your kids to measure the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar and add them to a large mixing bowl.
When adding the baking powder and salt, make sure your kids use their finger to level the teaspoon so you add just the right amount.
Mix the wet ingredients together
In a separate bowl or measuring jug, get your kids to measure the milk. If you have digital scales using the ml setting is the easiest way to do it accurately.
Melt the butter in the microwave or small pot and then add that to your milk.
Get your kids to crack the eggs in a small bowl before adding them to your milk. We always crack them into a separate bowl as it’s easier to fish out any rogue shell that goes in. If it doesn’t, simply use a larger piece of shell – it will stick to that more easily than your finger.
Finally, add the vanilla and then get your kids to mix it all in with a fork or small whisk.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients
Get your kids to pour the wet ingredients into your large mixing bowl. Mix it all in with a wooden spoon or spatula until you have a nice smooth batter.

Bake the donuts
Add the batter to your donut pans until they are about ¾ full. You can either spoon the batter in, or if you use a jug you can get your kids to pour the batter in. We found using a jug much easier and much less messy.
Bake the donuts for 8-10 minutes. They’re ready when they have risen and turned a nice golden brown colour.
Remove them from the oven and leave them in their tins while you make the chocolate glaze.
Make the chocolate glaze
Break up the chocolate and put it in a small heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water (a double boiler). Add the golden syrup and butter and mix it all together while the chocolate melts.
If your kids are old enough to be twisted around a hot cooker, they can help with the mixing.
Glaze the donuts
Once the chocolate has melted, remove the chocolate from the heat and take the donuts out of their donut pans.
Dip each donut in the chocolate then set them down on a wire rack. Get your kids to add some sprinkles as a finishing touch.

Serve and enjoy!
