Chocolate flapjacks
Chocolate flapjacks are the perfect, easy bake for kids. Using storecupboard ingredients they are the ultimate comfort food.
Chocolate flapjacks are a great, easy bake for children. Using storecupboard ingredients you can add whatever you like to the basic flapjack recipe and these chocolate flapjacks do exactly that. With chocolate chips in the mix and a layer of chocolate on top they’re the perfect treat for any chocoholic. My son loves chocolate and my daughter loaves oaty bars so these are the ultimate combination.
Chocolate flapjacks feel quite indulgent so they’re certainly not a healthy bake. If you want a slightly healthier version, why not try our fruity honey flapjacks, they’ve got no refined sugar so are great if you want to limit your kid’s sugar intake.

How can kids help make chocolate flapjacks?
Flapjacks including these chocolate flapjacks are quite an easy bake for kids to do that don’t need any specialist equipment. They can measure out the ingredients, help melt the butter and syrup and then mix it all together with wooden spoons. There’s no eggs to worry about, or rolling out or cutting out, so they’re great for toddlers and young children.
How long do chocolate flapjacks keep?
These will keep in an airtight container at room temperature (assuming it’s not too hot where you are) for a few days.
What can you use instead of golden syrup?
Golden syrup is easy to find here in the UK, but if you don’t have any try swapping it for an equal amount of corn syrup or even honey.
How do you cut flapjacks?
I always wait for flapjacks to have cooled before I cut them. If you wait for them to be cold, you’ll find they’ll have firmed up and are much easier to get out of the tin. If you like, you can score them when they are still warm to try and stop the chocolate on top from cracking when you portion them.

125g (3/8 cup) golden syrup
50g (1/4 cup) demerara sugar
220g (2 1/2 cups) porridge/rolled oats
200g (1 1/4 cup) milk chocolate
How to make chocolate flapjacks
Preheat your oven to 180C / 170C Fan / 350F and line a 18cm square baking tin with baking or parchment paper.
Melt the butter, sugar and syrup
Get your kids to measure the butter, sugar and golden syrup into a small pot. Heat it over a gentle heat, stirring it until it has all melted.
Measure the oats
Weigh the oats and add them to a large mixing bowl.
Mix everything together
Once the butter mixture has melted, pour it into the oats and stir it all together until all the oats are coated.
Bake the flapjacks
Get your kids to help pour or spoon the flapjack mixture into your prepared baking tin.
Using a metal spoon (or spatula) press the mixture down. Make sure you level the top and press it well down into the corners and edges.
Bake the flapjacks for 20-25 minutes. They’re ready when they’ve turned a nice golden brown colour.
Remove them from the oven and leave to cool in the tin.
Add the chocolate topping
Break the chocolate into small pieces and melt in the microwave. Melt it on medium power in 30 second blasts, stirring it well in between to make sure it doesn’t burn.
Altnernatviely, you can melt the chocolate in a bain marie (a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water).Again, stir the chocolate until it has fully melted.
Get your kids to drizzle or pour it over the cooled flapjack, then spread it out with a spatula until it covers the top.
Leave the chocolate topping to set, then with a sharp knife, cut the flapjacks into squares.
Serve and enjoy!

cookingwithmykids says
oops sorry! It was 50g and we used demerara sugar, but it would work with granulated sugar if you don’t have that.
