Chocolate Smartie cookies
Smartie cookies are a fun and colourful take on double chocolate chip cookies. They’re a great bake any child will enjoy (And they taste pretty good too!)
These Smartie cookies were inspired by some double chocolate chip cookies recipe, but rather than just using chocolate chips we’ve added Smarties for extra colour.
The colour of these Smartie cookies makes them perfect for cake sales and parties. Kids love the look of them (as well as the taste of them!) The cookies are deliciously gooey on the inside as well a little bit crisp on the outside, with bites of chocolate throughout – just the way I think a good chocolate chip cookie should be.
How can kids help make chocolate Smartie cookies?
Apart from melting the chocolate and butter these cookies are really simple to make with lots of steps your kids can help with. From measuring ingredients and mixing everything together, to cracking the eggs and adding all the smarties and chocolate chips.
They’re a relatively soft cookie dough, so dolloping the cookie mixture on the baking trays can get a bit messy. If you’re kids are younger and you want to save the mess, you might want to dollop on the cookie dough and let them just add the extra Smarties on top.
How long do Smartie cookies keep?
They never last long in our house, but will keep in an air tight container for 3-5 days. If you want to keep them for longer, you can freeze the cookies for up to 3 months. To freeze them, simply wrap the idividual cookies in cling film / glad wrap and pop them in a freeze bag. Make sure you allow them to defrost fully before you serve them. If you like you can heat them up for 5 minutes or so in the oven again.

Difficulty: A wee bit harder
Time: 30 minutes + 15 minutes baking
Serves: 12
Ingredients
50g (1/4 cup) unsalted butter
300g (2 cups) dark chocolate (200g melted for the cookie dough and 100g in chunks)
2 eggs
170g (7/8 cup) soft light brown sugar
½ tsp vanilla extract
150g (1 1/4 cups) plain / all-purpose flour
½ tsp salt
½ tsp baking powder
1 sharing pack Smarties (about 100g)
How to make smartie cookies
Preheat your oven to 170C/160C Fan and line 2 or 3 baking trays with baking/greaseproof paper.
Melt the butter and chocolate
Start by getting your toddler to help you break the first 200g of chocolate into small pieces. Pop it into a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Make sure you don’t let the bottom of the bowl touch the water.
Weigh out the butter (50g) and cut it into small pieces. Add it to your bowl.
Allow it to melt slowly, stirring it occasionally. If your children are old enough and you trust them near a cooker, you can let them stir this for you. Or you can stir it while they carry on measuring out the remaining ingredients.
Mix the eggs and sugar
Get your kids to weigh the sugar (170g) into a small bowl. Add it to your freestanding mixer if you have one, or just put it in a large mixing bowl.
Break the eggs (2) into a small bowl before adding it to your mixing bowl. We never add it straight in just in case any shell goes in. If it does, fish it out with a teaspoon or larger piece of shell.
Add the vanilla extract (1/2 tsp). Or get your child to if they have a steady enough hand. If i’m baking with both my kids, sometimes this is a job they do together – one holds the spoon while the other one pours.
Using your k-paddle attachment, a hand held whisk or wooden spoons, mix everything together.
Add the melted chocolate and butter mixer. Continue mixing everything on a slow speed until it is thoroughly combined.
Add the dry ingredients
Get your child to measure the flour into your small bowl. Help your child add the baking powder (½ tsp) and salt (½ tsp). Add to it your chocolate mix a little at a time, mixing after each addition (we did it in 3 batches).
Roughly chop the remaining chocolate into small pieces and add to your mixture. You can add some of the packet of Smarties at this point as well. Give it a final stir with wooden spoons or a spatula until it is evenly distributed.
Make the smartie cookies
Dollop around 5 or 6 equal amounts of cookie mixture onto each of your baking trays. If you have young children, they can do this job, and you just even up each cookie. Make sure the cookies are spaced apart as they’ll spread a little in the oven.
Add some Smarties to the top of each cookie. Your kids can press them gently into the mixture (and probably enjoy a few along the way!)
Pop the baking trays into the fridge for 15 minutes or so, to stop the cookies spreading too much in the oven.
Bake the chocolate smartie cookies
Pop your baking trays in the oven for 15 minutes. Keep an eye on them after they’ve been in for 10 minutes. They’re ready when the tops start to crack and they look glossy. They’ll feel a little soft when they come out of the oven which is fine, as long as they’re not too soggy in the middle.
Remove the cookies from the oven and leave them to cool on the baking trays for a few minutes before putting them on a wire rack to cool completely.
Serve and enjoy!

I think they look a little shinier than other cookies we make, but as long as they’re not too runny in the middle you know they’re ready.
