Caramel apple crumble
Caramel apple crumble is delicious spin on a classic, comforting dessert. A simple fruity filling with added caramel and a moreish crunchy crumble topping. It’s sure to be a firm favourite with all the family.
Caramel apple crumble is the most delicious spin on a classic dessert. The caramel adds a beautiful sweetness to the apples while the buttery crumble with added oats is deliciously wholesome and crunchy. My family love a crumble, they’re so easy to make and this version is no exception.
We’ve kept it simple by using some ready made Carnation Caramel (but you can use any brand you can find locally), so there’s no need to boil any sugar to make this recipe.
How can kids help make apple and caramel crumble from scratch?
Crumbles are great desserts for kids to make, because with only a few ingredients they’re so easy and this caramel apple crumble is no exception.
My kids love getting their hands messy, rubbing the butter and flour together with their fingers to make the crumble topping. And if you have slightly older children who want to practice their knife skills, cutting chunks of apple is a great job for them.
Finally, once you’ve prepared the fruit and crumble topping, even young children can help to assemble everything – arranging the apples, adding the caramel and sprinkling the crumble on topping on top.
What can you serve a crumble with?
Crumbles are delicious on their own but I love them even more with a little bit of vanilla ice cream or custard. If you have left over caramel it’s also lovely served alongside or on top.
How to store caramel apple crumble?
If you cover your crumble and pop it in the fridge it will keep for a few days. Reheat it in the oven until the centre is piping hot before you serve it – on a medium heat, it’ll take about 20 minutes.
Can you freeze it?
Yes. Once the crumble has been baked and cooled, you can wrap it well and put it in the freezer. It will keep in the freezer for a few months. To serve it, defrost it and reheat it in the oven until the filling is piping hot.
What apples are best for caramel apple crumble?
I like an apple with a slight tartness to it to balance the sweetness of the crumble topping. Granny Smith apples, Bramley apples or even Braeburn apples all work well in a crumble. They’re not too sweet and hold their shape a bit better when they’re cooked.

Ingredients
For the crumble topping
100g (1/3 cup + 2 tbsp) plain / all-purpose flour
115g (½ cup) butter
75g (1/3 cup + 2 tbsp) soft brown sugar
50g ( ½ cup) rolled oats
For the filling
500g apples (approximately 3 large apples)
50g (¼ cup) soft brown sugar
a splash of apple juice or water
8 tablespoons of caramel (we used a tin of Carnation Caramel)
How to make caramel apple crumble
Preheat your oven to 180C / 170C Fan / 350F
Make the crumble topping
Start by getting your kids to measure out the butter and flour. Chop the butter into small pieces – this is a good job for kids who want to practice their cutting skills as it can be done with a blunt or butter knife. Pop the flour and butter into a large mixing bowl.
Get your kids to rub the butter and flour together with their finger tips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
Measure the sugar and oats out and then add them to your bowl. Stir them in.
Prepare the filling
Peel the apples then get your kids to help chop them into chunks. This is a good job for kids if you can trust them with a small sharp knife as the pieces don’t need to be exactly the same size, as long as they are approximately the same.
Pop the apples into small pan with the brown sugar and a splash of water or apple juice. Gently heat the apples for 5 minutes or so until they have just begun to soften. If you trust your kids around a cooker they can help by stirring the apples so they don’t brown too much on the bottom.
Make the caramel apple crumble
Tip the apples out into a large baking dish and spread them evenly around the bottom. Then get your kids to dollop 8 or more tablespoons of caramel over the top of the apples.
Finally, get your kids to sprinkle the crumble topping on top covering all the fruit and caramel.
Bake the caramel apple crumble
Bake the crumble for approximately 45 minutes. It’s ready when the crumble topping has browned nicely and the apples and caramel underneath are bubbling.
Remove the crumble from the oven, and serve with any additional caramel, custard or ice cream.

fantastic, such a nice change from plain apple crumble I found the crumble mix a little too sticky so added a few more oats and handful of ground almonds.
