Strawberry crumble is a deliciously wholesome, colourful, super easy dessert kids will love. Bursting with beautiful fresh fruit, and topped with an oaty crumble topping it’s one of the simplest bakes kids can help make.
If, like us, you enjoy doing a bit of fruit picking in the summer, the chances are at some point you’ll have a glut of strawberries to use up and this is the perfect dish to do it with. It’s the ultimate summer dessert, although that doesn’t stop you making it at any time of year, whenever you can find strawberries in the shops.
There’s no easier dessert to make than a delicious crumble. With a simple fruity filling and crunchy crumble topping, kids and beginner bakers can have this dessert ready in no time. Apple crumble is the classic version of the dish, but swapping them for strawberries makes a lovely change as well as a beautiful red colour.
How can kids help to make a strawberry crumble?
A crumble was one of the first things I ever made with my kids. They’re so easy to do, and have very few ingredients so they really are a great dish for kids to help with.
Making the crumble topping is very simple and doesn’t need any special equipment. Your kids can measure the ingredients out and then rub them together with their finger tips which is a fun hands on job my kids love. Then it’s a simple job of adding the oats and sugar and mixing it all together. It really is that easy.
Children can also get involved in helping to prepare the fruit. Strawberries are a great fruit for kids to help with as there’s very little to do and they’re very soft so easy to cut. Once you’ve hulled the strawberries (which is a job for older children or grown ups), even younger children can help to cut them into pieces.
Finally, kids can also arrange the fruit and crumble topping in the dish.
Should I use fresh or frozen strawberries?
Fresh strawberries are best as frozen ones can be a little soggy and fresh strawberries have the best flavour. Strawberries are in abundance here in the summer so it’s easy to get all the strawberries you need. If they’re harder to come by, either because of where you live or the season, you can still use frozen ones. Use them straight from the freezer, and add five or so minutes on to the baking time.
If you’re using strawberries aren’t at their best, (the less sweet ones you find outwith the summer), you might want to add an extra tablespoon or two of sugar to the filling.
How do you hull strawberries?
To hull strawberries, use a small knife and run it around the top of the green, leafy top. That way, you should be able to remove the hull without losing too much of the strawberry.
If that sounds too hard, you can get little tools that will do it for you. They make it so easy, kids will enjoy giving it a go themselves.
Why is my crumble topping not crunchy?
Crumbles can end up a bit dry if you don’t use enough butter. If your crumble is too crumbly, simply try adding a little bit more butter. Either rub it in, or melt it and add it in that way.
Likewise, if your crumble is too soggy, you’ve perhaps used too much butter or not baked it for long enough. If you follow the quantities and instructions below, the addition of oats to this crumble should also ensure it’s nice and crispy.
What do you serve strawberry crumble with?
Crumbles can are delicious even served simply on their own, but if you want to really treat yourself add a serving of custard or vanilla ice cream.
Can you freeze strawberry crumble?
Yes. Once the crumble has been baked and cooled, you can wrap it well and put it in the freezer. It will keep in the freezer for a few months. To serve it, defrost it and reheat it in the oven until the filling is piping hot.
Can you reheat a cooked crumble?
Yes. We never finish a crumble in one sitting unless we’ve got friends round. You can reheat it in the oven the next day on a medium heat for about 20 minutes.
How do you store a strawberry crumble?
I always keep any crumble in the fridge, but if don’t have any space you can keep it out overnight, covered at room temperature.

Ingredients
For the filling
1 kg (6 cups) strawberries
50g (¼ cup) granulated sugar
1 teaspoon cornflour
1 teaspoon vanilla
For the crumble
125g (1 cup) plain flour
115g (½ cup) butter
75g (1/3 cup) soft brown sugar
75g (3/4 cup) porridge/rolled oats
How to make a strawberry crumble
Preheat your oven to 190C / 170C Fan / 375F and grease a large oven proof dish
Prepare the strawberries
Get your kids to help you hull and cut any large strawberries into pieces. You can leave smaller strawberries whole. To minimise how much fruit you loose, run your knife at an angle around the top of the hull to remove it rather than slicing the top off your strawberry.
Cutting the larger strawberries is a great job for little kids as they can do it with a blunt knife (like a butter knife) and it doesn’t matter if they end up the same size or not.
Pop the strawberries in a bowl and add the granulated sugar, cornflour and vanilla then mix them through. Set aside for now.
Make the crumble topping
Get your kids to measure out the flour and the butter. Cut the butter into small pieces, or if it’s easier you can grate it. Add the butter and flour to a mixing bowl or food processor.
Using your finger tips, rub the butter and flour together until the mixture resembles rough breadcrumbs.
If you have a food processor, you can use that to make the breadcrumb mixture. Simply pulse the butter and flour together until it’s just ready.
Get your kids to measure the sugar and porridge oats and add them to your mixing bowl. Mix them in with a spoon.
Make the strawberry crumble
Tip the prepared strawberries into your oven proof dish. Spread it around so they are nice and evenly spread over the base of the dish.
Now, get your kids to add the crumble topping on top with a large spoon. Make sure they add it so you have even coverage over the top of the fruit.

Bake the strawberry crumble
Bake the crumble for about 40 minutes. It’s ready when the crumble topping has turned a nice golden brown colour and the strawberries should be bubbling through in places.
Serve and enjoy.
