Apple turnovers
These apple turnovers are delicious golden puff pastry triangles with a cinnamon apple filling. If you use ready-rolled puff pastry there’s no easier recipes for kids to try making them the perfect autumnal bake.
Apple turnovers are an easy bake kids will love. Golden puff pastry triangles filled with delicious apple cinnamon filling, they’re such a great bake for making in the autumn (although you can enjoy them all year round!)
How can kids help to make apple turnovers?
This recipes for apple turnovers is so easy, it’s a great bake to make with children.
If you’ve got younger children, once you’ve peeled, cored and quartered the apples you can get them to cut them into small pieces. Apples are quite easy to cut and it doesn’t matter too much if the pieces are all the same size so they’re a great fruit for kids to practice their cutting skills.
If you use ready-rolled puff pastry, your kids will find it easy to cut out the triangles before adding the apple cinnamon topping and forming the turnovers. Your kids can also help add the egg wash before you bake the turnovers and drizzle on some icing afterwards. They really couldn’t be simpler.
Can I make apple turnovers in advance?
Yes, you can. You can prepare the turnovers a few hours before you bake them and store them in the fridge. If you want to make them further ahead, you can freeze them before baking. Freeze them individually on a tray before wrapping them in cling film / glad wrap and popping them in a freezer bag. When you want to bake them, you take them straight from the freezer and pop them in the oven.
How do I prevent my apple turnovers from becoming soggy?
To stop the puff pastry in your turnovers becoming soggy, make sure you allow your apple filling to cool and drain any excess liquid, before assembling your turnovers.
Also, make sure you pre-heat your oven before you put the turnovers in to make sure they become nice and crispy.
What type of apples are best to use in apple turnovers?
I think tart apples work really well in turnovers because they hold tend to hold their shape a bit more and add a nice contrast to the sweetness of the filling. Try something like a Granny Smith, Braeburn or Bramley apple.
If you don’t have any of these apples to hand, you can use a sweeter eating apple like a Royal Gala or Jazz apple, but you might want to reduce the amount of sugar you use in the filling.
Can I add any other ingredients to the filling?
Of course! We’ve made a really simple cinnamon-apple filling, but you could add alternative spices, extra fruit like raisins or sultanas or even a little drizzle of caramel.
How do I get my turnovers to be a lovely golden colour on top?
To get your puff pastry to turn lovely and golden in the oven be sure to add the egg wash before you bake them. Without the egg wash the turnovers will still taste delicious but they’ll have a paler colour.
What can I serve apple turnovers with?
We’ve added a little icing sugar drizzle on top of our apple turnovers, but if you prefer you can serve them warm with a little vanilla ice cream or some whipped cream.
How do I store apple turnovers?
You can keep turnovers for a few days at room temperature in an air tight container. If you like, you can reheat them in a medium oven for ten minutes or so before serving them.

Ingredients
For the apple filling
2-3 large apples
50g light muscovado sugar
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 table spoon butter
1 table spoon water
For the turnovers
320g ready-rolled puff pastry
1 egg
1 tablespoon milk
To decorate
50g icing sugar
How to make easy apple turnovers
Preheat your oven to 220C / 200C Fan / 425F and line a baking tray with baking or parchment paper.
Prepare the apples
Start by peeling, coring and quartering the apples then get your kids to cut them into small pieces. It doesn’t matter if the apple chunks aren’t all the same size, but they do need to be fairly small. Older children might be able to help with some of the peeling etc, but I find it easiest to get the apples ready in slices before getting them to help.
Prepare the apple filling
Pop the apples into a sauce pan along with the sugar, butter, cinnamon and water. When your kids are measuring out the cinnamon make sure they use their finger to level the ½ teaspoon to make sure they add just the right amount.
Heat the apples until the butter has melted and the apples have softened. Remove them from the heat and set them aside to cool.
Prepare the puff pasty
If you’re using ready-rolled puff pastry remove it from the microwave ten minutes or so before using it, then it should just be a simple job of unrolling it out into a rectangle.
Get your kids to cut the large rectangle into quarters. Then cut each of the four small rectangles in half into triangles.
Assemble the apple turnovers
Once the apple filling has cooled, drain any excess liquid and get your kids to add dollops of the apple mixture onto half of the puff pasty triangles leaving a little space around the edges.
Crack the egg into a small dish and add the milk before giving it a little whisk. Get your kids to brush around the apple filling along the edges of the puff pastry. Top the apple with the other half of the puff pastry and press along the edges.
Get your kids to press along each puff pastry edge with a fork to seal them.
Finally, transfer each turnover to your prepared baking tray and then get your kids to brush over each one the egg wash.
Bake the apple turnovers
Bake the apple turnovers 18-20 minutes. They’re ready when they’ve puffed up and turned a lovely golden brown colour.
Remove them from the oven, and leave them to cool on the baking tray for a few minutes before placing them on a wire rack to cool completely.
Add the icing drizzle
Mix the icing sugar with a little bit of water until it is just runny. Pop it in an icer or a small freezer bag with a tiny hole cut in one corner. Drizzle over the icing to decorate each turnover. Alternatively, you can dust over some icing sugar, or serve it with ice cream.
Serve and enjoy.
