Banoffee crumble or caramelised banana crumble is a really tasty twist on the humble crumble. Its a really easy dessert filled with deliciously caramelised bananas and then topped with a simple crunchy, oaty topping. It really is one of the tastiest and simplest bakes kids can make.
If you have some bananas browning in your fruit bowl, you could make a classic banana bread, but if you want to branch out this crumble is a fabulous alternative.
There’s no easier dessert to make than a delicious crumble. With a simple fruity filling and crunchy crumble topping, kids and beginner bakers can have this dessert ready in no time. Apple crumble is the classic version of the dish, but swapping them for caramelised bananas makes a lovely change.
How can kids help to make this caramelised banana crumble?
Making a crumble is one of the easiest things you kids can do in the kitchen – it’s a great introduction to baking for anyone. In fact, it was probably one of the first things I ever learnt to make.
The crumble topping is really simple and doesn’t really need any special equipment (unless you have a food processor and want to use that). Once your kids have measured everything out they can rub the ingredients together to make the crumble which is a fun hands on job kids will love. After that, it’s just a job of adding the oats and sugar and mixing it all together.
Kids can also help to prepare the bananas and if they’re old enough, can even help to caramelise them.
Finally, kids can also arrange the bananas and crumble topping in the dish.
Why is my crumble topping soggy?
This recipe should give you a texture that is just right, but sometimes crumbles can end up a bit wet and soggy if you use too much butter/not enough flour and oats. Try adjusting the ratio until it comes out just right.
On the other hand, if your crumble is too crumbly, you might need a little more butter. Either rub it in, or melt it and add it in that way.
I find the addition of oats to this crumble recipe ensure the topping is nice and crispy.
What do you serve with a caramelised banana crumble?
You could eat this as it comes, but if you want to really treat yourself try adding a serving of cold custard or vanilla ice cream.
Can you freeze a banana crumble?
Yes. Once you’ve baked and cooled the crumble, you can wrap it well or put it in a Tupperware and pop it in the freezer. It will keep in the freezer for a few months. To serve it, defrost it and reheat it in the oven until the filling is piping hot.
Can you reheat this crumble?
Absolutely! As delicious as this is, we can never finish a crumble in one sitting unless we’ve got friends round. You can reheat it in the oven the next day on a medium heat for about 20 minutes until the centre is hot and bubbling again.
How do you store a banana crumble?
We keep our banana crumble in the fridge because of the fresh fruit, but if don’t have any space you could keep it out overnight, covered at room temperature.
If you refrigerate it you can keep for a couple of days. Reheat it in the oven before reserving it if you like.

How to make a banana crumble
Make the caramelised bananas
Start by getting your kids to measure out the butter and sugar. Cut the butter into a few pieces then add that, along with the sugar to a small sauce pan or microwavable bowl.
Heat the butter and sugar gently until the sugar has dissolved, the butter melted and it’s turned a nice golden brown colour.
Get your kids to peel and chop the bananas into pieces about 1cm thick.
Pour the caramel into the base of a serving dish and arrange the bananas on top trying to fill all the spaces.
Use as many bananas as you need to fill the base of your dish – around 2 or 3.
Make the crumble topping
Get your kids to measure out the flour and butter, then cut the butter into small pieces. Add the butter and the flour to a large mixing bowl.
Alternatively, you could grate the butter into the bowl.
To make it by hand, use your fingertips rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles rough breadcrumbs. Its fine if there are a few chunks of butter left in the mixture – it will add to the texture of the crumble topping later.
You could also use a food processor to make the crumble topping. It’s a quicker and certainly less messy way of making the topping. Simply add the butter and flour to your food processor and pulse it until the breadcrumb mixture forms.
Next, get your kids to measure out the sugar and oats and add them to your mixing bowl. Give it all one final stir with a spoon so it’s well mixed in.
Make the caramelised banana crumble
Get your kids to either pour or spoon the crumble on top of the caramel and bananas.
Try and add it so that you get even coverage all over the top of the fruit.
Bake the banana crumble
Bake the crumble for about 40 minutes. It’s ready when the crumble topping has turned a nice golden brown colour. You might also find some of the caramelised bananas bubbling out through the topping.
Serve and enjoy!
