Trifle is one of the easiest desserts you can make with kids. And this peach trifle, uses a few pre-prepared ingredients to make life even easier, as you’re basically just arranging things in a dish.
There’s any number of variations on trifle, but this is the one we’ve always had at Christmas time. My Granny used to make it, then my Mum, and this year for the first time, I made it with the kids. As it uses tinned peaches, you can make it at any time of year – there’s no need to find fresh fruit.
You could make more of it from scratch, like the sponge or the custard but that wouldn’t stick to my own Granny’s recipe and would therefore have no place at our Christmas table(!) But for a different occasion I wouldn’t mind perhaps adding a swiss roll instead of the trifle sponges and some raspberries instead of the peaches.
How can kids help to make a peach trifle?
This is quite simply the easiest dessert you can make with your kids. Using the ready made ingredients means you’re essentially arranging everything in a dish. So your kids can help spread jam on the sponges and lay them in the dish, then add the peaches and custard. Once you’ve whipped the cream get your kids to add that then decorate with lots of festive sprinkles.
How long does a trifle keep?
We tend to make the trifle ahead of time except the cream. Add the cream shortly before you serve it. Once it’s made the trifle will keep in the fridge for a day or two.
Do you use canned or fresh peaches
Using canned peaches makes this dish really simple to prepare. It also means you can have it at any time of year. We love it at Christmas time when we can’t find fresh peaches in the shop very easily. During the summer months, when peaches and nectarines are readily available you can swap the tinned peaches for fresh ones.

How to make a peach trifle
Make the sponge layer
Cut the sponges in half through the middle and get your kids to spread them with jam.
Sandwich the two halves back together again and arrange them in your dish, making sure you cover the whole layer. Depending on the size/shape of your dish, you might want to cut a few pieces of sponge to fill in any gaps until the base of the dish is completely covered.
Pour the sherry into a small dish, give your kids a teaspoon and get them to drizzle the sherry over the top of all the sponges.
If young kids are eating this trifle, you might want to swap the sherry for a little apple juice.
Add the peach layer
Get your kids to arrange the peaches on top of the sponges again, making sure they cover the whole layer. Hannah enjoyed taking charge of this and making the peaches look really pretty (never mind that they get covered in custard and cream!)
Add the custard
To make our life easier, we just used custard from a carton, but you could make your own from scratch or from custard powder.
Carefully pour the custard on top of the peaches, making sure to cover all of the peaches.
Add the cream
Add the cream to a bowl or free-standing mixer, then whip it until it forms soft peaks. Get your kids to help add it to the top of your custard, then add the sprinkles on top.
