Peach cobbler is a delicious fruit filled dessert. Made from tinned peaches (or fresh ones when they’re in season), and topped with a sweet cakey biscuit-like topping it’s a simple dessert kids will love making (and eating).
Why is it called a cobbler?
Cobblers get their name because the topping, once baked, looks like cobblestones.
How can kids help make peach cobbler?
This peach cobbler is a fun and easy dessert for kids to make. The cobbler topping is relatively simple to make and a bit hands on which is always fun for children.
Your kids can help to measure out all the ingredients as well as rubbing the butter and flour together which is a fun hands on activity.
To form the cobbler your kids can lay the peaches in your dish before dolloping on the cobbler topping. It’s really as easy as that.
Can you substitute tinned peaches for fresh in peach cobbler?
Yes, tinned or canned peaches are great because they’re cheap and available all year round. In the summer (July and August are peach season for us in the UK), you might be tempted to swap canned for beautiful fresh peaches.
If you want to use fresh peaches, simply swap the 2-3 cans for around six peaches. Make sure you use lovely ripe peaches that are soft and sweet, but not overly ripe and mushy.
Peal and slice the fresh peaches before you put them in your baking dish.
Nectarines can also be used in the place of fresh or tinned peaches.
What can you use instead of self raising flour?
If you don’t have any self raising flour (which should be easy to find in supermarkets here in the UK), you can swap it for an equal amount of plain or all-purpose flour. Simply add an additional teaspoon of baking powder and a pinch of salt.
What can you serve peach cobbler with?
Cobblers can be eaten on their own but are especially delicious with a little bit of vanilla ice cream or custard.
How do you store peach cobbler?
If you cover your cobbler and pop it in the fridge it will keep for a few days. Reheat it in the oven until the centre is piping hot before you serve it.

Ingredients
110g (½ cup) butter
165g (1 cup) self raising flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
100g (½ cup) golden caster suga
125 (½ cup) ml milk
2 – 3 x 420g tins of sliced peaches
How to make peach cobbler
Preheat your oven to 180C / 170C Fan / 350F
Make the cobbler topping
Rub the butter and flour together
Start by getting your kids to measure out the butter and the flour and get them to cut the butter into small pieces. This is a good job for kids to try if they want to practice their chopping skills as it doesn’t need a sharp knife and doesn’t matter if the pieces aren’t all the same size.
Put the butter and flour into a large mixing bowl.
Get your kids to rub the butter and flour together with their finger tips until the mixture resembles rough breadcrumbs.
Add the remaining dry ingredients
Get your kids to measure out the baking powder and sugar and add them to your mixing bowl. Make sure your kids use their finger to level the teaspoon of baking powder so that you add just the right amount.
Mix the sugar and baking powder in.
Add the milk
Measure the milk either using the ml setting of your digital scales or a measuring just and get your kids to slowly pour it into your mixing bowl.
Stir it all until the mixture comes together.
Make the peach cobbler
Lay the peaches in the base of a baking or pie dish. Try and make sure they cover the bottom of your dish nice an evenly.
Get your kids to spoon the cobbler topping on top of your peaches. Don’t worry about spreading the cobbler topping evenly, it should have some gaps in between each dollop as it will spread a bit when it bakes.
Bake the peach cobbler
Bake your cobbler in your oven for 35-40 minutes. It’s ready when the topping has turned nice and golden brown and is slightly crispy on top. You can check that it’s cooked by inserting a skewer into the cobbler – if it comes out clean it’s ready. If any wet dough sticks to your skewer, pop it back into the oven for a few more minutes.
Remove your peach cobbler from the oven.
