Puff pastry cheese stars are the perfect party nibble or appetiser. If you use a sheet of ready made puff pastry they couldn’t be easier to make. With only a few ingredients you can let your kids take charge and make them. They’ll be able to rustle these up in no time.
The cheese stars are deliciously crispy and full of cheesy flavour. You could serve them to guests during the festive season, or enjoy them as a snack at any time of year.
How can kids help to make cheese stars?
This recipe for cheese stars is so simple. It’s one of the easiest things kids can bake in the kitchen, especially if you use ready rolled puff pastry.
You can put kids in charge of laying out the pastry and covering it in grated cheese. (You might want to grate the cheese yourself to keep small fingers safe from the grater).
Once you’ve made the cheese pastry, kids will enjoy rolling it out and cutting out the stars. If they love playing with play dough, even really young children will enjoy helping with this job.
What cheese should I use?
To enjoy these at their best use a nice strong cheese. We used a mature cheddar, the sort we have in the fridge anyway. You could use a mixture of cheeses – parmesan is great option, so is Gruyère or even try a smoked cheese.
How long do they keep?
These cheese stars are best served on the day you make them (especially when they’re still a little warm from the oven. They will keep for a day or two though at room temperature in an air tight container.

Difficulty: Easy
Time: 15 minutes plus 15 minutes baking
Serves: 12-15 twists
Ingredients
1 sheet of ready rolled puff pastry
75g cheese (cheddar)
2 tablespoons of milk
How to make cheese stars
Preheat your oven to 220C/200C Fan / 425F and line two baking sheets with baking or parchment paper.
Prepare the puff pastry
Take the puff pastry out the fridge about 15 minutes before you start so it has time to warm up a bit before you use it. This will just make it a bit easier to unroll without it cracking.
Unroll the pastry carefully and lay it out on your work surface or a large chopping board.
Add the cheese
Grate the cheese (using the small side of your grater), of if your children are old enough they could do this for you.
Then get your kids to sprinkle the cheese over half of the pastry so it is evenly covered. Leave a little cheese back to sprinkle on top later if you like.
Once half of your pastry sheet is covered in cheese, get your kids to fold the other half of the sheet on top of the cheese. Press it down firmly on top.
Using a rolling pin, roll the pastry out until it is roughly the same size as it was when you started.
Make the puff pastry cheese stars
Give your kids a star cutter and get them to cut out the puff pastry stars. Place them on your prepared baking trays.
Once you’ve cut out all you can, gather up the scraps, roll them out again and cut out some more stars. Keep doing this until you’ve used up all your pastry.
Pour a little bit of milk in a small bowl or saucer, then get your kids to brush the tops of each star using a pastry brush. If you like, you can add a little sprinkle of grated cheese or even some sesame seats on top.
Bake the cheese stars
Bake the puff pastry cheese stars in the oven for around 12-15 minutes.
They’re ready when they’ve turned a nice golden brown and are crispy rather than soggy.
Remove them from the oven and leave them on the baking trays for a few minutes before putting them on a wire rack to cool.
Serve and enjoy.
