Bronuts
Bronuts are a delicious cross between a brownie and a donut. Baked in a donut pan but with all the chocolatey gooeyness of a brownie they’re the perfect bake for any chocolate lover.
Bronuts are a fun new bake kids will love. They’re basically a brownie baked in a donut pan so you get all the delicious chocolatey gooeyness you’d expect in a brownie but in a perfect individual portion.
My kids really love brownies and enjoyed making doffins (our muffin/donut cross) so these bronuts were a new, fun bake. They’re crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside like all good brownies should be, but all presented in the shape of a donut. They look great and taste fantastic but best of all are surprisingly easy to make.
We’ve based the recipe on our easy brownie recipe which is great as it all gets mixed together in one bowl. I generally like bakes that use the all in one method when I’m baking with kids as they’re really easy and involve less mess and washing up!
What is a bronut?
If you can’t guess from the name, a bronut is simply a cross between a brownie and a donut! They’re baked in a donut pan so have the unique shape of a donut but a fudgey and chocolatey like a brownie.
How can kids help to make bronuts?
We’ve deliberately kept this recipe very simple so have based it on our ever popular and easy chocolate brownie recipe.
It’s a great recipe for kids to try as everything just gets mixed together in one mixing bowl. As long as you remember to add all the ingredients (in any order) you can’t really go wrong.
As well as being able to help measure out all the ingredients your kids can practice their egg cracking skills (a vital skill for any young baker to master).
And once you’ve made the bronut batter your kids can help to pipe them into the donut tin. Using a piping bag makes this step a bit easier and less messy than if you just spoon in the mixture. Its also a great way for your kids to practice their piping skills.
Finally, once the bronuts have been baked your kids can help you to decorate them. The bronuts are actually tasty enough without any decoration, but adding a little chocolate and some sprinkles just makes them that little bit prettier to look at.
How long do bronuts keep?
Bronuts will keep in an air tight container for a few days. If you want to keep them for longer you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Simply wrap them well with cling film/ glad wrap when they’re undecorated and pop them in a freezer bag. Make sure you defrost them fully before you decorate and serve them.
What sort of pan should I bake these bronuts in?
I’d recommend using a silicone mini donut pan. We’ve tried to make these using our metal donut pan but found no matter how well we greased them the bronuts stuck. If you use a greased silicone donut pan these should pop straight out.
If you want to use the exact pan we used try this silicone donut pan.

How to make bronuts
Grease three silicone bronut pans with oil or butter.
Make the bronut batter
Get your kids to add all the ingredients to a mixing bowl. It doesn’t matter what order you add them as it all gets mixed in together but if you follow the order they’re listed you’re less likely to miss anything out.
Start by getting your kids to add the dry ingredients to your mixing bowl – the caster sugar, cocoa powder and self raising flour.
Next, add the butter. If you keep the butter in the fridge and it is still hard, cut it into a few pieces and pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to soften it otherwise it won’t mix in well. Dont heat it long enough for it to melt.
Add the eggs. Get your kids to crack them into a small bowl before adding them into your mixing bowl just in case any shell goes in. If/when you do get shell in, simply fish it out with a larger piece of shell or a teaspoon (it will stick to that better then it will your finger).
Mix everything together with the k-paddle of your free-standing mixer, a hand held mixer or wooden spoons until it is well combined and nice and smooth.
Finally, add the chocolate chips/chunks and stir them in with a wooden spoon or spatula.
Make the bronuts
Add the bronut batter to a piping bag fitted with a large circular nozzle. Add a food bag clip at the top end to stop the brownie batter coming out the top when you pipe.
Pipe the mixture in to the donut tins until they’re about 3/4 full. You don’t want to fill them any more than that so that they don’t rise over the top of each hole.
If you don’t have a piping bag you can just spoon the mixture into your donut pans, the piping bag just makes it easier and less messy.
Bake the bronuts
Bake the bronuts for 15-20 minutes until they are cooked through. Use a skewer inserted into the middle to double checked they are fully baked. It should come out with minimal wet batter still on the stick.
Remove the bronuts from the oven and leave them to cool in the tin. They’ll be easier to remove if you wait until they have fully cooled.
Decorate the bronuts
Get your kids to break the chocolate into pieces and pop them in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water (otherwise known as a double boiler or baine marie).
Heat the chocolate until it has melted and is nice and smooth.
Dip each bronut in the melted chocolate or add the chocolate to a small bag or squeezy bottle and drizzle over the top of each bronit. Then get your kids to add some sprinkles on top.
Leave them to set, serve and enjoy.
