Orange biscuits
These orange biscuits are a simple butter biscuit with a zing of orange flavour. They’re a great, easy bake to make with kids.
Orange biscuits are a delicious, simple cookie kids will love making (and eating!) We’ve taken an easy biscuit recipe and added a subtle pop of orange flavour, taking the humble butter biscuit to the next level.
Our lemon biscuits always prove very popular and I think these orange biscuits should be just as well-liked. They’re certainly just as easy to make and with only a few store cupboard ingredients can be ready in no time.
How can kids help to make orange biscuits?
These are such an easy biscuit which makes them a great bake for kids.
Kids will be able to measure and mix all the ingredients together as well as getting to practice cracking the egg and zesting & juicing the orange.
My kids also enjoy getting their hands a little bit messy and with this recipe they can do just that. Rolling the biscuit dough with their hands and pressing them down is a really fun but simple job even young children can help with.
How long can you store orange biscuits for?
Orange biscuits can be kept in an air-tight container for up to a week. If you want to keep them for longer you can freeze them for a few months. Simply individually wrap them in cling film them pop them in a freezer bag.

Ingredients
100g (½ cup) butter, softened
75g (1/3 cup + 1 tbsp) caster sugar
225g (1 ¾ cup) plain/all-purpose flour
1 egg
orange zest from 2 oranges
1 tbsp orange juice
How to make orange biscuits
Preheat your oven to 180C / 160C Fan / 350F and line 2 baking trays with baking / greaseproof paper.
Cream the butter and sugar together
Get your kids to measure out the butter and sugar and add them to a large mixing bowl or free-standing mixer. Beat it together with a hand held mixer, wooden spoons or the k-paddle of your free-standing mixer, until it is light and fluffy.
Add the flour and orange zest
Get your kids to measure the flour and add it to your mixing bowl.
If your kids are old enough, get them to help you zest the orange. We normally use the small side of our grater but you can use a zester if you have one.
Mix the zest and flour in until it is well combined. The biscuit dough will be quite stiff at this point.
Add the egg and orange juice
Crack the egg into a small bowl then add it to your mixing bowl. We never add it straight in just in case any shell goes in. If it does, simply fish it out with a larger piece of shell – it will stick to this better than your finger!
Get your kids to juice one of your oranges until you have about 1 table spoon’s worth of juice. We got enough from one quarter of our orange. Add it to your mixing bowl.
Mix it all in until the biscuit dough starts to come together. You might find it easier to do the last bit with your hands, just to bring all the crumbs together.
Make the orange biscuits
Take pieces of dough and roll them into balls about the size of a walnut / ping pong ball. I normally give my kids the pieces of dough so they get the right amount and let them roll them into balls.
Put them on your prepared baking tray then get your kids to press them down gently with their hands or a fork.
Chill the biscuits in the fridge for 15 minutes.
Bake the orange biscuits
Bake the orange biscuits in the oven for about 12 minutes. They’re ready when they have started to turn a nice golden brown colour.
Remove the biscuits from the oven and leave them on their baking trays to cool for 5 minutes before putting them on a wire rack to cool completely.
Serve and enjoy!

Quite bland. Missing something as far as flavour goes.

The orange flavour can be quite subtle. If you want a bit more oomph, perhaps add a 1/4 tsp of ginger or cinnamon.
