Cinnamon twists
Cinnamon twists are one of the easiest things to bake for children or beginner bakers. Made with ready made puff pastry, you can have these ready in no time.
Cinnamon twists are so easy to make. If you or your kids are new to baking these are the perfect place to start, especially if, like us, you use ready made puff pastry.
We’ve made a few things like these with puff pastry and they always go down a treat. I love how simple and how quick they are to make. If you use ready rolled puff pastry you can have these ready in half an hour.
We love cinnamon rolls in our house, but they do take a while to make even if you use our easy, one hour cinnamon roll recipe. Cinnamon twists are a delicious alternative. They’ve got the same great buttery, cinnamon flavour, but are made in a really simple, quick way.
How can kids help to make cinnamon twists?
This is such an easy bake, kids could do almost all of it themselves.
From measuring the ingredients to making the cinnamon sugar, and then spreading it all over the puff pastry, there is a lot for even young bakers to help with.
With a little help, even young children can cut and shape the twists. We used a pizza cutter to make this job a bit easier and to keep little fingers safe.
The only thing my kids found a bit tricky was twisting the puff pastry strips, but it was easy for me to fix any wonky twists as we put them on the baking trays.
How do you roll cinnamon twists?
We found the easiest way to make the twists was to take each strip of pastry and hold them at each end. Then we gently twisted each end in opposite directions until the twist reached the middle.
If you have to, you can give them an additional twist or even the twist out once you’ve put them on the baking tray.
The twists work best if you have long thin strips, so when you’re cutting them make sure the strips aren’t too thick (no more than a few cm’s or an inch). If your kids find it hard to cut them neatly in a straight line, you can mark the pastry before they cut it.
How do you store cinnamon twists?
Cinnamon twists are delicious served still a little warm from the oven, but if you’ve got some left over they’ll keep in an airtight container for a few days.
Can you freeze cinnamon twists?
Yes, puff pastry cinnamon twists freeze really well. It’s best if you freeze them before you bake them. Simply put them on a baking tray and put them in the freezer for a few hours. Once they’ve hardened, transfer them to a freezer bag and they’ll keep in a freezer for a few months.
There’s no need to defrost them before you bake them. You can put them straight in the oven from the freezer.

Ingredients
320g sheet of puff pastry (we used Jus Rol)
50g (1/4 cups) butter
100g (1/2 cups) granulated sugar
2 teaspoons of cinnamon
How to make cinnamon twists
Preheat your oven to 220C / 200C Fan / 425F and line 2 baking trays with baking or parchment paper.
Prepare the puff pastry
Take the puff pastry out of the fridge about 15 minutes before you start so it has the chance to warm up slightly before you use it.
Get your kids to carefully unroll your sheet of pastry on to your chopping board or work surface. If you’ve made your own pastry or are using a block of puff pastry get your kids to roll it out into a rectangle just under 5mm thick.
Prepare the butter and cinnamon sugar
Get your kids to measure out the butter then melt it in the microwave or in a small pan on the hob.
Meanwhile, measure the sugar into a small bowl and add the cinnamon. Give it a mix so it is all well mixed in together.
Make the cinnamon twists
Using a pastry brush, get your kids to brush the melted butter all over one side of the puff pastry. If you don’t have a pastry brush, use the back of a dessert spoon or soup spoon.
Once the pastry is covered in butter, sprinkle over the cinnamon sugar until there is a nice even coating over the pastry. Gently press the cinnamon sugar into the butter with your hands.
Very carefully, flip the sheet of pastry over, then repeat the steps above. Brush is with the remaining butter and add the rest of the cinnamon sugar so both sides are covered.
Now you need to cut the sheet of pastry into strips about 2cm or 1 inch thick. I used a ruler to mark where to cut along both long edges and the kids used a pizza cutter to cut the strips.
Once all the strips are cut, take them one at a time, and holding at each end carefully twist them in opposite directions until it’s got a nice even twist all the way along. Place them on your prepared baking trays.
Bake the cinnamon twists
Bake the cinnamon twists for 12-15 minutes. They’re ready when they have turned a nice golden brown colour and have crisped up nicely.
Remove them from the oven and leave them on their baking trays to cool.
Serve and enjoy!
