Blueberry crumble
Blueberry crumble is one of the tastiest and easiest desserts. It’s a delicious crispy oaty crumble topping on top of beautiful colourful fruit. And it’s so easy to make it’s perfect for kids to try.
Blueberry crumble is a super easy, delicious not to mention colourful dessert kids will love. Bursting with beautiful fresh fruit with an oaty crumble topping it’s one of the simplest bakes kids can help make.
There’s no easier dessert to make than a delicious crumble. And although it’s simple I still come back to it time and again as one of my favourite desserts.
With a simple fruity filling and crunchy crumble topping, kids and beginner bakers can have this dessert ready in no time. Apple crumble is the classic version of the dish, but swapping them for blueberries makes a lovely change as well as beautiful bursts of purple colour.
How can kids help to make a blueberry crumble?
Crumble was one of the first recipes I ever made with my kids. They’re so easy to do, are fun and hands on as well as having very few ingredients so they really are a great dish for kids to help with.
Making the crumble topping is very simple and doesn’t need any special equipment. Your kids can measure the ingredients out and then rub them together with their finger tips which is a fun job that lets kids get their hands a little messy. Then it’s a simple job of adding the oats and sugar and mixing it all together. It’s really very simple.
Your children can also get involved in helping to prepare the fruit as there’s not too much to do. They just need to measure them out and add the cornflour, sugar and lemon juice. There’s no chopping, peeling or dicing with blueberries which makes it the easiest of all the crumbles.
Finally, kids can also arrange the fruit and crumble topping in the dish.
Should I use fresh or frozen blueberries?
You can use either fresh or frozen blueberries in this recipe. Fresh blueberries are nice as they have a little more bite to them, but frozen blueberries can be a little cheaper and are easily available all year round.
If you’re using frozen blueberries allow them to come up to room temperature before you bake them or you may need to add a few minutes onto the bake time.
Why is my crumble topping not crunchy?
Crumbles can end up a bit dry if you don’t use enough butter. If your crumble is too crumbly, simply try adding a little bit more butter. Either rub it in, or melt it and add it in that way.
The addition of oats to this crumble should also ensure it’s nice and crispy. But if you find yours is too soggy you’ve perhaps used too much butter or not baked it for long enough. If you follow the quantities and instructions below, it should work out well.
What do you serve a blueberry crumble with?
Crumbles are delicious even served simply on their own, but if you want to really treat yourself add a serving of custard or vanilla ice cream.
Can you reheat a cooked crumble?
Yes. We never finish a crumble in one sitting unless we’ve got friends round. You can reheat it in the oven the next day on a medium heat for about 20 minutes. If you prefer you can reheat the crumble quickly in the microwave. The topping will become a little more soggy but it’s still tasty.
Can you freeze blueberry crumble?
Yes. Once the crumble has been baked and cooled, you can wrap it well in cling film and put it in the freezer. It will keep in the freezer for a few months. To serve it, defrost it and reheat it in the oven until the filling is piping hot.
How do you store a blueberry crumble?
I always keep any crumble in the fridge, but if don’t have any space you can keep it out overnight, covered at room temperature.
