Halloween monster cupcakes
Monster cupcakes are a fun bake kids will love. They’re perfect for Halloween but can be enjoyed by children at any time of year!
Monster cupcakes are the perfect treat for kids to make at Halloween. These fun colourful cupcakes let kids use their imaginations to create their own hairy, scary monster. They’re so easy and quick to make, they’re great for kid’s Halloween parties or just any occasion where you want some cute little monsters!
How can kids help to make the monster cupcakes?
These are really easy cupcakes to make so they’re great for kids. The cupcake recipe itself is very simple and kids can help to measure and mix all the ingredients together. If you like, you can make it even easier and quicker if you use shop bought cupcakes.
Making the fur is also really easy and a fun way for kids to practice their piping skills. See below for our tips on how to do it.
Can you use shop bought cupcakes?
The great thing about these monster cupcakes is that the real fun starts once the cupcakes are made. That means you can use any cupcake you like.
I’ve included our favourite, easy cupcake recipe below, but you can use any recipe you like. If you want something even quicker and easier, try a packet mix or ready made shop-bought cupcakes.
You can also swap the vanilla cupcake for a chocolate cupcake for any chocolate fiends out there.
How to pipe the monster ‘fur’
We used a piping bag with a small star nozzle but you can make the fur in lots of different ways.
If you have a ‘grass’ nozzle you can give your monsters longer hairy fur.
If you don’t have a piping bag you can use a freezer bag with a tiny hole cut in the corner and use that to pipe long thin strands of fur.
Alternatively, if you have younger children or want something a bit easier, simply spread the icing on with a palate knife or spoon and add some colour sprinkles along with the googly eyes.

Ingredients
3 eggs, large
150g (1 ¼ cup) self raising flour*
150g (¾ cup) caster sugar
150g (2/3 cup) butter / margarine
½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp vanilla extract
For the vanilla frosting
300g (2 2/3 cups) icing sugar
100g (1/3 cup + 1 tbsp) butter
25ml milk
A few drops of vanilla extract
Food colouring
* If you don’t have any self raising flour use plain or all purpose flour instead and add an extra teaspoon of baking powder.
How to make monster cupcakes
Preheat your oven to 180C / 170C Fan / 350F and prepare your baking tray.
Get your kids to line a muffin tray with paper cupcake cases. We used Halloween colours but you can use anything you like or have to hand.
Mix everything together
Get your kids to add all the ingredients to a large mixing bowl or free-standing mixer. We started with the dry ingredients but it doesn’t matter what order to you add everything.
Weigh the flour and a caster sugar and add it to your mixing bowl.
Measure the butter or margarine. If you’re using butter, chop it into small pieces before adding to your bowl. If it’s not soft (we always forget to take it out the fridge beforehand), pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to soften it. This will make it easier to mix to a smooth batter.
Measure the baking powder with a measuring spoon, making sure your kids level the top with their finger.
Add the vanilla extract.
Finally, crack your eggs into a small bowl before adding them to your mixing bowl.
My kids normally tap the egg on the edge of our mixing bowl and then use their thumbs to break it open. I keep a spare small bowl next to us to keep the shell. I find it helps save mess if the kids know where the empty shell should go.
We always crack our eggs in a small bowl first just in case any shell goes in. If it does (and in our house it normally does), use a bigger piece of shell to fish it out.
Mix everything together using the k-paddle of your free-standing mixer, a hand held mixer or some wooden spoons.
Keep mixing until you have a nice smooth batter.
If you want colourful monster cupcakes add some colour to your batter. Make sure it is a bakesafe colouring otherwise it will fade in the oven. We use either Wilton or Sugarflair colours.
Bake the monster cupcakes
Get your kids to fill the cupcake cases about ¾ full.
We find the easiest way to do this is with our ice-cream scoop. It scoops out the perfect amount and saves a lot of the mess you get when you use smaller spoons.
Bake the cupcakes in the oven for around 20 minutes.
They’re ready when they’ve turned a nice golden colour and when you stick a skewer or sharp knife in the middle it should come out clean.
Remove the cupcakes from the oven and leave them in the pan for a few minutes before putting the cupcakes on a wire rack to cool completely.
Decorate the halloween monster cupcakes
Make the buttercream icing.
Measure the icing and butter out and add them to a mixing bowl or free-standing mixer.
Mix them together with the k-paddle of your mixer or a hand held mixer. Make sure you put a lid on your mixer or cover your bowl with a clean tea towel before you start mixing otherwise the icing will go everywhere!
Mix it for a few minutes until it is nice and soft.
Add some colour to your icing. We chose three colours that work well at Halloween – green, purple and orange – but you can use any colours you like.
We separated the icing into 3 bowls and the kids stirred in the icing.
Put the icing into piping bags with a small star nozzle attached. Alternatively, if you have a grass attachment, that can give your monsters long hairy fur.
Get your kids to pipe on the icing in small bursts until your cupcakes are covered in ‘monster fur’.
Add some googly eyes and extra Halloween sprinkles if you like.
