Blackberry scones are a delicious way of using up fresh blackberries – the perfect bake for this time for year.
I guess it depends where you live but where we are, at this time of year there seems to be bramble bushes full of blackberries growing everywhere ripe for the picking. And blackberries are an ideal addition to so many different bakes. There are so many delicious things you can bake with them.
Blackberry scones are a really simple but really tasty way of using some fresh, ripe blackberries. Not only do they add a beautiful colour to the scones, they add a nice burst of fruity flavour.
How can kids help make blackberry scones?
This recipe for blackberry scones is so easy, making them the perfect bake for kids to try. Rather than rolling and cutting out the scones, we simply cut them all from a round of scone dough. It makes the job really easy for children, is a fun and different way of serving scones and is ideal if you don’t own any round cutters!
As well as cutting out the scones, kids will enjoy using their fingertips to make the scone dough. We generally don’t encourage children to play with their food so this is a good opportunity to do exactly that. Taking the chance to be tactile with the flour and butter, rubbing it in to make breadcrumbs is a great sensory experience kids will love.

How to make blackberry scones
Preheat the oven to 220C/ 200C Fan 425F and line a baking tray with baking paper.
Rub the butter and flour together
Get your kids to measure the flour and butter out and add them to a large mixing bowl.
Using your fingertips rub the butter and flour together until your mixture resembles breadcrumbs. This is a task that even really little kids can do – mine love rubbing in because it’s very tactile. We so often tell our children not to play with their food, and this is the perfect chance to enjoy a sensory experience.
Add the sugar
Measure out the sugar then add it to your mixing bowl. Stir it in.
Add the wet ingredients
Get your kids to crack the eggs into a small bowl. Even if your kids are young, let them give this a go – you’ll be surprised how quickly they learn to do it without making a mess.
Make a well in your scone mixture and add the egg in the middle.
Measure out the milk into a measuring jug. If you have digital scales use the ml setting to measure the milk accurately.
Pour the milk into the well with the egg and slowly start to mix it in with some forks or spoons.
Add the blackberries
Throw a few handfuls of blackberries into your bowl. We added around 100g but you don’t need to be too accurate. Mix them in with your hands until the scone mixture comes together in one ball and the blackberries are evenly dispersed.
Form the blackberry scones
I make these scones really easily – rather than rolling and cutting them out, simply pop the dough on the prepared baking tray and form a round with the dough then pat it down into a flat circle around 1 inch thick.
Cut the scone into slices with a butter knife. I scored the top so the kids knew where to cut then let them do the rest. Separate the segments a little before you put them in the oven to ensure they cook properly.
Bake the blackberry scones
Pop the scones in the oven for 12-15 minutes. They’re ready when they’ve turned golden brown and are cooked fully down the edges.
Remove them from the oven and put them on a wire rack to cool slightly.
Serve them warm with a little jam.

There’s something really satisfying about making a bit slab of scone and cutting it into pieces. Saves the bother of rolling and cutting!

I do love fruity scones but have never had blackberry ones. Such a brilliant idea as gentle tartness from blackberries counteracts sweetness from the sugar making these a perfect treat. Thank you for sharing these with #BakingCrumbs 🙂
