Sausage pasta for kids
This easy sausage recipe for kids is a great a family friendly midweek meal. Sausage and tomato pasta is so easy, kids can help make it and tasty enough that everyone will enjoy eating it.
I love this easy sausage pasta for kids. It combines two things I know my children will always eat (sausages and pasta) so it’s perfect for fussy eaters and takes the battle out of mealtimes.
I started making this sausage and tomato pasta when my kids were toddlers because one of my kids loved sausages and the oether loved pasta so combining them meant everyone would eat dinner (in theory!) In reality it’s worked and is now a regular dish on our dinner menu. We normally throw in peppers for a bit of colour but you can add any other vegetables you have lying around that your kids like, like broccoli or spinach.
If you like, you can add extra flavour to the dish by experimenting with different sausages. I like adding in the pork and apple sausages or pork and leek sausages our supermarket has and my kids like the slight sweetness they have. It works equally well with plain sausages however, like any great family meal – just use whatever you know your kids prefer!
If you’re vegetarian or trying to cut down on meat, you can even make this with vegetarian sausages.
If you like the sound of this sausage pasta, you’ll love our other family meals including our child friendly chilli con carne and creamy italian sausage pasta.
How can kids help make this easy sausage pasta?
My kids help me prepare the vegetables for this dish. From peeling the onions and garlic, to helping to chop the pepper or any other vegetables we’re having in it.
Older children can help to make the sauce by adding the ingredients and stirring it in. Only let children who you can trust around a cooker do this job, but it’s one task my older daughter really enjoys.

how to make sausage pasta

Make the tomato sauce
While the sausages are cooking, dice the onion and chop the pepper in to small chunks. Peel and crush the garlic. Your kids can help you peel the onion and prepare the vegetables.
Fry the onion in a little oil in a large pan. Leave it for a few minutes until softened. Add the garlic and cook for another minute. If your kids are old enough they can help you by stirring the onions in the pan to stop them from burning.
Add the pepper, tin of tomatoes and herbs. Stir everything together. Cover and leave to simmer for 5 minutes or until the sausages are ready.

Remove the sausages from the oven and cut into small bite sized pieces. Add them to the sauce.
Add the cooked pasta to the sauce, and stir it all in so the pasta is coated.
