If you’ve tried our chocolate rice crispies, these are a delicious chewy alternative filled with marshmallowy goodness you’re sure to love. Rather than setting them in individual cases, we’ve made them into squares which makes these treats even more portable.
How can kids help to make marshmallow Rice Krispie treats?
These are such an easy no bake treat, even toddlers can help to make them.
Kids of all ages can help measure the ingredients out – it’s such a great lesson in numbers and measurement.
Older children might be able to help melt the butter and marshmallows. They just need to be able to safely stir it all in, making sure to be careful around the hot pan.
Younger children will be able to mix everything together. You can give them a job of coating all the rice krispies in chocolate and leave them to it.
Once you’ve measured out the Rice Krispies and melted the marshmallows, you just need to mix it all together. Again, this is a really easy job that kids of all ages should be able to help with.
Finally, you can get your kids to help press the Rice Krispie mixture into the baking tin and press it all firmly down.
How long do marshmallow rice Krispie treats keep?
If you keep them in an air tight container Rice Krispie treats will last for a few days. If you want to keep them for longer, wrap them individually in cling film / glad wrap and pop them in the freezer.
They’ll keep in the freezer for up to 3 months. Make sure you defrost them fully at room temperature.
Why are my Rice Krispie treats really hard?
If your Rice Krispie treats have set really hard it could be because the marshmallows got too hot and/or were cooked for too long. You need to melt the marshmallows on a medium heat and remove them from the heat as soon as they’ve melted.
Why are my Rice Krispie treats really soft?
Rice Krispies can set a bit soft if you add too much butter. I recommend using digital scales and weighing the ingredients rather than using measuring cups to get the ratios just right.
Can I melt the marshmallows in the microwave?
Yes, you can melt the marshmallows in the microwave. Do it on 90% power and stop it every 10 seconds or so to check them and stir them through so they don’t over heat.

Ingredients
150g (6 cups) Rice crispies
3 tablespoons butter
250g (4 cups) marshmallow
How to make marshmallow rice crispy treats
Get your kids to grease or line a 9 x 9 inch (22cm x 22 cm) baking tin with baking or parchment paper.
We like to lay a strip of baking paper the width of our tin in one direction then do the same in the other direction. If you leave a bit hanging over the edge it’ll be easier to remove from the tin later.
Melt the butter and marshmallows
Get your kids to measure out the butter and pop it in a pan. Heat it over a gentle heat until it has melted.
Keep the pan on the heat and add the marshmallows. Stir them in until they’re melted.
Measure the rice crispies
While the butter and marshmallows are melting you could get your kids to measure out the Rice Krispies and add them to a large mixing bowl. This is a great job for very little cooks if they’re too young to help stir the melting marshmallows and butter.
Mix everything together
Once the marshmallows are fully melted, pour the mixture into the mixing bowl.
Stir everything together until the Rice Krispies are all nicely coated in the melted marshmallows.
Leave the Rice Krispie treats to set
Get your kids to pour or spoon the marshmallow coated Rice Krispies into the prepared baking tin. Using the back of a spoon or a spatula, press it all down making sure you press it well into the corners and edges and smooth down the top.
Leave the Rice Krispie treats to set for at least an hour. You can leave it somewhere at room temperature, but if you want them to set more quickly pop them in the fridge.
Once they’re set, remove it from the baking tin and cut it into squares.
Serve and enjoy.
