Marshmallow top hats
Marshmallow top hats are a classic Scottish ‘bake’. They’re familiar to anyone who ever went to a children’s birthday party in the 80s, so a perfect, easy nostalgic bake!
Marshmallow top hats are a fabulous nostalgic bake. They’re a classic treat from any children’s birthday party and honestly one of the easiest things you could possible make. I say they’re an easy bake, but the reality is they’re a ‘no-bake’ recipe which means apart from melting the chocolate, they’re the perfect recipe for children, (even younger children and toddlers) to get involved in.
For anyone not familiar with top hats – they’re basically just a marshmallow topped with a Smartie set in base of chocolate. They’re cute, colourful and super simple to make. You almost don’t need a recipe for them, they’re so easy, but I know it’s helpful to know what quantities to use etc.
How can kids help to make marshmallow top hats?
This top hat recipe is a very easy no bake recipe which is perfect for kids who are new to baking.
As a no bake recipe, apart from melting the chocolate your kids could be left in charge of everything. They’ll be able to break the chocolate into pieces (although sometimes this is hard work for small hands). Once you’ve melted the chocolate your kids can help fill the mini cases before adding a marshmallow and Smartie on top.
There’s nothing more to it than that. They’re really that simple and as you can see, a perfect treat for kids to make.
Can I use white chocolate?
Yes, you can use white, dark or like we have, milk chocolate. I find it best to melt white chocolate in a bain-marie rather than a microwave as it burns easily.
How do you store top hats?
Marshmallow top hats will keep in an air tight container for a few days. I wouldn’t recommend freezing the top hats.

How to make marshmallow top hats
Melt the chocolate
Get your kids to break up the chocolate and add it to a heatproof bowl. Place the bowl over a pan of simmering water, making sure the bowl isn’t touching the water.
If your kids are old enough they can help stir the chocolate with a spatula or wooden spoon until it has melted and is nice and smooth.
Alternatively you can melt the chocolate in the microwave. Do it in short bursts, stirring in between each blast to make sure the chocolate doesn’t burn.
Make the top hats
Spoon the chocolate into each petit four case. It should be about a teaspoon for each case. If you want to make it neater you could also add the chocolate to a piping bag or a freezer bag with a small hole cut in the corner and pipe the chocolate in. We’ve got some squeegy bottles which worked perfectly for getting the chocolate into the cases neatly.
Get your kids to place the marshmallow on top of the chocolate and press it down gently to make sure that it sticks.
Pipe a small bit of chocolate on top of each marshmallow and use that to stick a Smartie on top.
Leave the chocolate to set, serve and enjoy.
