Garlic bread pizza
This Garlic bread pizza is a delicious side dish for any meal. Soft homemade pizza dough topped with garlic butter, they’re so easy kids will love making them.
Garlic bread pizzas are a great side dish or snack. Made with a simple, homemade pizza dough, topped with garlic butter, they’re much cheaper, softer and nicer than shop bought ones. But that doesn’t mean that they’re not really easy to make.
My kids love making any kind of bread and this recipe is no exception. I think it’s nice to bake something together that’s not full of sugar for a change, and they love getting to knead the dough and getting really hands on.
Although you need a bit of time to make these garlic bread pizzas, it’s mostly just so the dough has a chance to prove. It’s not a difficult recipe, and a great one to make with kids.
How can kids make garlic bread pizza?
This is a great hands on recipe for kids: they can measure the ingredients, kneed the dough, and make and add the garlic butter topping.
If you want to cheat a bit you can use a mixer or bread machine to help you make the dough. I find this saves us a bit of time and helps to ensure the dough gets kneaded properly. I normally still let my kids knead the dough by hand for a bit, as they really enjoy it, but I find they won’t do it well enough or for long enough to not also give them a bit of a hand with it.
Kids can also help make the topping. Garlic butter is really simple to make – it’s a simple case of mixing all the ingredients together, and if the butter is soft enough it’s really easy for kids to do.
You could also make these even easier by using shop bough pizza dough. It won’t be quite as satisfying as making your own, but they’ll be delicious nonetheless.
What flour should you use to make these garlic bread pizzas?
Strong bread flour or 00 flour work best because they have more protein which helps to develop the gluten. If you don’t have either flours, you can use plain or all purpose flour however and you’ll still end up with a tasty garlic bread.
How long do garlic bread pizzas keep?
You can keep the garlic bread pizza over night, covered in the fridge. If you like reheat it in the oven for five minutes or so again before you serve it.

How to make a garlic bread pizza
Make the pizza dough
Start by getting your kids to measure out the flour and add that to a large mixing bowl or the bowl of your free-standing mixer. In separate corners of the bowl add the olive oil, salt and yeast.
When your kids are measuring out the salt and yeast, make sure they use their finger to level the spoon so that they add just the right amount.
Next, add the water. It should be lukewarm – not too cold so you activate the yeast, but not so hot that it kills the yeast.
Use a spoon (or your hands) to mix until all the flour comes away from the side and you have a soft dough. You might not need to add all the water or you may need to add a splash more – you want the dough to be soft, not sticky.
If you’re using a free-standing mixer, attach your dough hook and let it all mix in until there is no loose flour at the bottom of the bowl.
Knead the dough
You can do this either by hand or using your mixer.
To do it by hand, put a little oil or flour on your work surface to stop the dough sticking. Place the dough on top and knead it for 5-10 minutes until it looks smooth and elastic. This is a great job for children as they can’t really go wrong. Just make sure they are working the dough, pulling it, stretching and rolling it so it becomes quite elastic.
If you have a mixer you can leave that to most of the hard work for you. We often let our mixer knead the dough for 5 minutes or so, then finish it off by hand. Doing that means you know it’s been worked enough but your kids can still have a chance to get their hands messy.
Once you’re dough is ready, place it in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with cling film and leave it somewhere warm for at least an hour or until it has doubled in size.
Make the garlic butter topping
While the dough is rising, get your kids to mix the butter, garlic, parmesan and parsley together. The butter needs to be soft enough for this to work, so if it’s not (we keep ours in the fridge), pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to soften it, but not long enough to melt it.
Set the garlic butter aside for now.
Preheat your oven to 220 C / 200C Fan / 425F and lightly grease a pizza stone, pizza tray or baking tray.
Make the garlic bread pizzas
Once your dough has doubled in size, tip it out on to a lightly floured work surface and knock it back. (Knocking back, fold it a few times to knock the air out of it – or just let your kids man handle the dough briefly!)
Using your hands or a rolling pin roll/stretch the dough out into a nice round circle as thin as you can get it.
Alternatively, you could split the dough into 2 or 4 pieces before you roll them out if you want to have smaller individual garlic bread pizzas.
Spread the garlic butter on top of your pizza dough, leaving an inch or so around the edge.
Bake the garlic bread pizzas
Bake the garlic bread pizza in the oven for 8-10 minutes. It’s ready when it’s lovely and golden and crisp.
Remove it from the oven, cut it into slices, serve and enjoy.
