Sprinkles cookies are the perfect, fun and colourful bake for kids. They take a simple cookie recipe to the next level with the addition of rainbow sprinkles – what child could resist them?!
How can kids help to make sprinkles cookies?
As with most cookie recipes, these sprinkles cookies follow a very basic cookie recipe so kids can help measure and mix everything together to make the cookie dough.
Once you’ve made the cookie dough, there’s no rolling pins or cutting out require, simply roll the dough into balls then coat them in the sprinkles. This is a great chance for kids to get their hands messy (although i’ll warn you, that if your kids are anything like mine, you may end up sweeping up sprinkles from your kitchen floor for days!)
How do sprinkles stick to cookies?
We rolled the cookies in sprinkles before we baked them. You have to gently press the sprinkles into the dough to make them stick but we didn’t have any problems with them coming off in the oven.
What type of sprinkles should you use?
We used what we’d probably call ‘hundreds and thousands’, but they can also be known as ‘nonpareils.’ The better the quality of sprinkles you use, the less like the colour will run or fade.
These cookies would also work well with colourful seasonal sprinkles – the kids you can find in the shops at Halloween or Christmas.
What can you use instead of self raising flour?
If you don’t have self raising flour, swap it for an equal amount of plain or all-purpose flour and add an extra tea spoon of baking powder.
How long to the sprinkles cookies keep?
These cookies will keep for a few days in an airtight container. 4

How to make sprinkles cookies
Preheat the oven to 180C / 170C Fan / 350F and line two baking trays with baking or parchment paper.
Cream the butter and sugar together
Get your kids to measure out the butter and sugar and add them to a large mixing bowl or free-standing mixer. If your butter isn’t soft (we always forget to take ours out of the fridge beforehand) cut it into a few pieces then pop it in the microwave for a few seconds – not long enough to melt it – just to make it easier to mix.
Using the k-paddle of your free-standing mixer, a hand held mixer or wooden spoons, cream the butter and sugar together until they are light and fluffy.
Add the egg and vanilla
Crack the egg into a small bowl, then add that to your mixing bowl. We never add it straight in, just in case any shell goes in. If it does, simply fish it out with a larger piece of shell.
Measure the vanilla. If you have younger children you may need to hold the measuring spoon while they pour in the vanilla or vice versa.
Mix the egg and vanilla in until they are well combined. The mixture will look quite wet at this point.
Add the flour
Measure out the flour then add that to your mixing bowl. Mix it in until it has all come together in a nicely mixed cookie dough.
Make the sprinkle cookies
Start by pouring the sprinkles out into a small bowl.
Get your kids to take small balls of cookie dough and roll them into balls. You might need to help ensure all the balls are the same size so they cook evenly – approximately the size of ping pong balls is about right.
Roll each ball of cookie dough in the sprinkles, pressing them in gently so they stick, then pop them on your prepared baking trays, pressing them down a little. Leave a little space between them as they’ll spread a little when they cook.
Put your baking trays in the fridge for 15 minutes or so, to stop the cookies spreading too much in the oven.
Bake the sprinkles cookies
Bake the cookies for around 8-10 minutes. They’re ready when they are just starting to turn golden brown at the edges.
Remove them from the oven and leave them on the baking trays to cool, you can then pop them on a wire rack to cool completely.
Serve and enjoy,
