Pigs in blankets (sausages wrapped in bacon)
Sausages wrapped in bacon or ‘Pigs in blankets’ as we know them in the UK, are an essential part of any Christmas dinner, but that’s not to say you cant enjoy them at any time of the year.
Pigs in blankets, or sausages wrapped in bacon are a must have side dish at any Christmas dinner. That said, you can also enjoy them at other times of the year – with a Sunday roast or even as a slightly fancy ‘bangers and mash’.
If you’re not from the UK you might not know what pigs in blankets are. In the USA you might expect them to be a hot dog sausage wrapped in a bread type pastry rather than small chipolatas sausages wrapped in bacon.
Apparently in Scotland they’re also known as kilted soldiers. This isn’t a term I’d ever come across before, but I might adopt it now!
How can kids help to make pigs in blankets?
This is a great dish for kids to help with as it’s so easy. I know at Christmas my kids are pretty excited so need to channel their energy somewhere. Getting them involved I n putting together some of the Christmas dinner is perfect for keeping them busy and this is the perfect dish for them to take charge of.
Wrapping sausages in bacon is such an easy job once you show your kids what to do, they’ll be able to carry on with the rest of them. It;s really as simple as wrapping each sausage in the bacon before putting them on your baking tray so even young children and toddlers can help make them.
Can you make pigs in blankets ahead of time?
Yes. These can be made a day in advance, covered and kept in the fridge. You can also cook them in advance and reheat them with the rest of your roast or Christmas dinner.
Can you freeze sausages wrapped in bacon?
Yes. Once they’re assembled freeze them, individually, on a baking tray/sheet overnight before putting them in a freezer bag. Once in the freezer bag they’ll keep for a few months. Make sure you defrost them fully before cooking them.

Ingredients
12 Chipolata sausages
12 strips of streaky bacon
How to make sausages wrapped in bacon (pigs in blankets)
Preheat your oven to 200C / 180C Fan / F and lightly grease a small baking tray with oil.
Make the sausages wrapped in bacon
Start by getting your kids to separate the strips of bacon. Ours tends to come in 6 wide strips that we then rip in half so they are about 1-2 inches (3cm) wide.
Now, take each sausage and, starting at one end, wrap a strip of bacon around it, overlapping slightly and moving along until the whole sausage is wrapped. When you’re done, pop it on your baking tray, tucking the loose end under.

Bake the pigs in blankets
Bake the sausages wrapped in bacon for about 30 minutes. They’re ready when the bacon looks crispy, cooked and has turned a nice golden brown colour at the edges.
Remove them from the oven, serve and enjoy.
