Your children can help measure out and, if they’re old enough, melt all the chocolate custard ingredients together. Even young children can help cut and arrange the waffles in the oven proof dish.
This recipe needs 4 egg yolks, so it’s an excellent chance for kids to practice separating eggs. It’s a particularly good recipe to practice with as it doesn’t really matter if any egg whites go in with the yolks.
Finally, kids can help with the simple task of pouring the chocolate custard over the waffles before you bake it.
Do you have to use waffles?
The waffles in this take on the traditional dessert add a delicious twist. They’re sweet, soft and crispy all the same time. Having said that, if you don’t have any waffles you could make this dish with some slices of bread. White bread would work best.

Ingredients
150g (1 cup) dark chocolate
300ml (1 ¼ cups) double / heavy cream
200ml (¾ cup) milk
50g (¼ cup) butter
50g (¼ cup) caster sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
10 waffles
4 egg yolks
How to make a chocolate waffle pudding
Prepare a 30 x 22 cm oven proof dish by buttering the base and sides.
Melt the chocolate custard ingredients
Get your kids to break up the chocolate and add that to a heatproof bowl. In the same bowl, add the cream, milk, butter, sugar and vanilla extract.
Pop the bowl over a pan of simmering water (a bain-marie), and heat everything gently until it has all melted. If your children are old enough to be trusted next to a hot pan, get them to stir it all with a wooden spoon.
Once it has all melted together and is a lovely glossy colour, remove it from the heat and leave it to cool slightly.
Arrange the waffles in a dish
Get your kids to arrange the waffles your prepared dish. You want the waffles to overlap – if you need to, cut larger waffles in half diagonally so they fit well.
Add the egg yolks to the chocolate mixture
Start by separating the egg yolks from the whites.
We do this by cracking the eggs over a small bowl then tipping the yolk from one half of the shell to the other, letting the white fall into the bowl below.
Pop the egg yolks into a separate small bowl.
Slowly pour the egg yolks into the chocolate mixture, stirring it well until it is fully incorporated into the mixture.
Pour the chocolate custard over the waffles
Carefully get your kids to pour the chocolate mixture over the waffles making sure they are all covered.
Leave the waffles to soak for at least an hour.
Bake the chocolate waffle pudding
Preheat your oven to 180C / 160C Fan / 350F.
Pop your bread and butter pudding in the oven for around 30 minutes.
It’s ready when the chocolate custard has set, but with a slight wobble in the centre.
Remove it from the oven, leave it to cool for a few minutes, sprinkle some icing sugar over the top then serve.
