Ingredients

For the filling
  • 4 large pears
  • 50 g (¼ cup) demerara sugar
For the crumble
  • 125 g (1 cup) plain flour
  • 115 g (½ cup) butter
  • 75 g (⅓ cup) soft brown sugar
  • 50 g (⅓ cup) rolled oats

Equipment

  • Digital scales
  • Mixing bowl
  • Food processor
  • Measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • Pie dish

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 190C / 170C Fan / 375F
Make the crumble topping
  1. Measure out the butter and flour. Chop the butter into small pieces, or you could grate it if you find that easier. Add the butter and flour to a large mixing bowl or food processor.
Rub the butter and flour together with your finger tips until the mixture resembles rough breadcrumbs.
  2. Measure the sugar and porridge oats out and add them to your mixing bowl. Mix them in with a spoon.
Prepare the pears
  1. Peel, core and cut up the pears into bite sized pieces.
Make the pear crumble
  1. Add the pear into your baking dish and sprinkle over the sugar. Make sure the pears are nicely spread out over the base of the dish.
  2. Next, pour or spoon the crumble topping over the top of the pears. Again, make sure there is a nice even coverage over the top of the fruit.
Bake the pear crumble
  1. Bake the crumble for 40-45 minutes. It's ready when the crumble topping has turned a nice golden brown colour and the pear mixture should be bubbling through in places.

Notes

If you have a food processor you can use that to make the breadcrumb mixture. Simply pulse them both together until it's ready.
